Visiting Assistant Professor of Education
The Department of Education and the Office of Graduate Studies at Furman
University invite applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor
position (with possibility of renewal) beginning August 1, 2022. Education
Department and Graduate Studies faculty value diverse ideas and perspectives,
commit to the implementation of culturally responsive teaching, and prepare
teachers and administrators skilled in educating students with different
learning needs in a wide range of public schools and settings. Consideration
will be given to candidates who have demonstrated commitment to building an
equitable and diverse educational environment.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate courses in human
growth and development, learning theory, and supervision of individualized
internships in non-profit agencies, courses that promote the values of
diversity, equity, and inclusion that Furman embraces. Qualifications include
an earned doctorate (ABD considered) in human development or related field
(e.g., Educational Psychology, Special Education); experience with inclusive
pedagogy & curriculum and in applying pedagogical knowledge in K-6 and/or
secondary settings; record of at least three years of effective public-school
teaching; ability to model exemplary teaching practices; and ability to engage
in scholarly activities.
Furman's program of teacher education is accredited through NCATE (now CAEP)
and the South Carolina Department of Education. The Department of Education
embraces Furman's historical commitment to teacher education as well as a
rigorous examination of public schooling within the context of a liberal arts
curriculum. It further incorporates the principles of The Furman Advantage in
a wide range of experiences to develop educators as scholars and leaders (See
Vision and Mission of the Program here).
Graduate courses are offered on and off campus in a variety of formats,
including in-person, online, and blended/hybrid.
Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest featuring relevant
experience, statement of philosophy of education, résumé, dissertation
abstract/prospectus or recently published article, names of three references,
and all degree transcripts. Online submissions are required.
