The CUNY Graduate Center (Graduate Center/GC) is one of 25 colleges and schools in the City University of New York (CUNY) system, the nation's largest urban public university. The Vice President for Information Technology/Chief Information Officer (VP IT/CIO) is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic planning, development, implementation and management of technology initiatives and services at the CUNY Graduate Center. This role involves overseeing the Graduate Center's IT infrastructure, systems, applications, and services ensuring that technology supports the research activities, teaching and learning and administrative needs of the institution. This senior leadership role directly reports to the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration. This position requires the incumbent to work in the office.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive IT strategy aligned with the Graduate Center's mission and strategic plan. Collaborate with college leadership, faculty, students and staff to identify opportunities for leveraging technology to enhance efficiency, innovation, and student success.

  • IT Governance: Establish and maintain IT governance frameworks, policies, and procedures to ensure effective decision-making, risk management, and compliance with relevant regulations and standards.

  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to understand their technology needs and provide solutions that enrich their activities. Foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Technology Infrastructure: Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of robust and secure technology infrastructure, including networks, servers, storage, and data centers, to ensure optimal performance and availability.

  • Application Management: Lead the management of various software applications and systems used by the Graduate Center and provided by CUNY's Office of Computing and Information Services for functions such as student information, finance, human resources, research, and learning management.

  • Cybersecurity and Data Privacy: Develop and implement cybersecurity strategies to protect sensitive data and systems from cyber threats. Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations and implement CUNY's protocols for data breach prevention and response.

  • Budget and Resource Management: Develop and manage the IT budget, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to support the institution's technology initiatives while optimizing cost efficiencies.

  • System Office Collaboration: Consults with the CUNY Office of Computing and Information Services in the coordination of specific CUNY- wide academic, research and administrative technology initiatives.

  • Vendor Management: Engage with technology vendors and partners to evaluate campus specific products, negotiate contracts, and ensure that services provided align with both the Graduate Center's and CUNY's requirements.

  • Decision-Making: Contribute to high-level decision-making processes by providing insights, analysis and recommendations based on a deep understanding of trends in higher education, institutional needs, and internal capabilities.

  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate closely with other senior leaders to foster a cohesive leadership team, working collectively to address challenges, exploit opportunities, and drive over all institutional success.

  • Team Leadership and Talent Development: Build and lead a diverse team of IT professionals, providing guidance, mentorship, and opportunities for professional development.

  • Communication: Effectively communicate the Graduate Center's mission and strategic plan, as well as IT strategy to internal and external audiences. Foster transparent communication across all levels of the organization.


    This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

  • Eight (8) years of experience and expertise in information technology in an IT governance structure, or shared governance decision making, with at least 4 years of proven success in leading and managing a large or complex enterprise-wide technology operation, including strategic planning, IT budgeting and procurement contracts, Business Continuity Resilience & Disaster Recovery planning, vendor resource and personnel management.

  • Experience managing research and academic technologies with a deep understanding of user needs in a research-intensive environment.

  • Ability to build strong relationships, establish trust, and to work with dynamic and diverse members of the campus community including faculty, students, and staff towards a commitment to open communications and transparency.

  • Expert collaboration skills to work with business partners, stakeholders and user communities on creating and implementing tactical plans.

  • A commitment to the teaching and research mission and related functions of the Graduate Center.

  • A BA/BS degree in computer information systems, business administration or management, computer science or a related field. An advanced degree in one of these disciplines is desirable.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with a particular focus on facilitation of generative discussions that leads to action items tied to clear outcomes.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full- time basis. Sponsorship will not be offered for this position.

    $175,000 - $199,000. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
