Position Description:

The University of Iowa department of Anesthesia is seeking an accomplished academic anesthesiologist to serve as Vice Chair for Quality and Safety. The Vice Chair for Quality and Safety position is intended to promote excellence. This individual will report to the Chair of the Department of Anesthesia and work closely with the Chair, University and CCOM Chief Quality Officers, and Anesthesia Administration. The selectee will also oversee activities as they relate to Quality and Safety in faculty and trainee education, and patient care. The successful candidate will need to exercise emotional intelligence, build trust and credibility, and collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders to achieve operational goals.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Provide clear vision and leadership for departmental clinical performance improvement and quality measures in the Department of Anesthesia

  • Assist the Chair in fostering an environment that values and supports Quality and Safety programs

  • Inventory and annually review all quality efforts related to the Department of Anesthesiology

  • Support department clinical performance improvement and quality measures

  • Anesthesia Quality Institute and National Anesthesia Clinical Outcomes Registry department lead.

  • Facilitate department participation in AQI/NACOR

  • Ongoing review of AQI/NACOR reports. Notify Chair and collaborators of trends, incidences, and indicators of concern

  • Develop and implement improvement plans

  • Work with the VC for education to identify and design creative, innovative activities that will enhance the educational experience in quality improvement, and patient safety fundamentals

  • Anesthesiology Resident Quality and Safety Conference Coordinator and Facilitator

  • Associate Program Director for Quality and Safety

  • Develop and facilitate curriculum to meet resident ACGME quality and safety-related milestones

  • Together with the Vice Chair for Clinical Operations

  • Participate in and facilitate faculty recruitment

  • Orient new faculty members to roles and responsibilities in quality improvement, and patient safety fundamentals

  • Develop measures for initial professional practice evaluation and ongoing professional practice evaluation for faculty and anesthetists

  • Meet with the Chair at least quarterly to review overall Departmental Quality with measurable data, and anticipated or planned initiatives/goals for the upcoming year

  • Work closely with the Director of Anesthesia Simulation to facilitate simulation learning within the Department.

  • Education Requirement:

    Candidates must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree

    Qualified candidates must show successful completion of an approved residency program in anesthesiology

    Required Qualifications:

    Candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Iowa

    Demonstrated interest, commitment, and leadership in education with excellent communication skills

    Demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment

    Certifications:

    Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification

    Candidates must be board-certified in Anesthesiology (or non-US Board equivalent)

    Desirable Qualifications:

    Prior experience as a Quality and Safety program director or Vice Chair

    Fellowship training or equivalent clinical experience in any of the anesthesiology subspecialty areas

    Involvement in national anesthesiology quality societies
