    About Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences was formed in July 2014 through the merger of the former Faculty of Veterinary Science and the Department of Agriculture and Food Systems. The Faculty's core teaching, postgraduate training, research, clinical consultancy and industry development activities are delivered at the Parkville, Werribee and Dookie campuses, and the Veterinary Hospital operates at Werribee.

    Research within the Faculty has led to some outstanding outcomes including: increased agricultural productivity; vaccines and diagnostic products that have been commercialised throughout the world; enhanced animal welfare; improvements in public health; and contributions to basic understanding of animal biology.

    About the Role Based at our newly redeveloped Werribee campus, the Equine Veterinary Nurse (ELIC) will support the operation and provision of service within the Equine Lameness and Imaging Centre, providing crucial support to a team of Veterinarians and Imaging Technicians.

    With an emphasis on patient care, the position will provide high-level nursing support and horse handling assistance to clinic staff, working quickly and proficiently while ensuring best practice protocols are adhered to at all times.

    Under the direction of staff, the role will be responsible for maintaining stock requirements, and assisting with imaging activities as required, in accordance with radiation and operational safety protocols.

    There may be opportunities for further education and up-skilling in this position. Also, opportunities to be involved in operations at the Werribee International Quarantine Centre in Werribee.

    Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the care and husbandry of all patients within the Equine Lameness and Imaging Centre
  • Recording and maintaining all documentation, patient records, animal ethics records in accordance with best practice, University policies, procedures and SOPs
  • Assisting the Imaging Technician (ELIC) in monitoring all personnel and animals entering the imaging suites to ensure their safety and adherence to safety protocols at all times
  • Assisting and maintaining imaging suites ensuring the areas are organised and clean in accordance with infection control requirements
  • About You To be successful in the role, you will have demonstrated experience in a veterinary nursing role, working with equine patients specifically. You will have proven animal handling experience, particularly horse-handling skills and experience gained within the equine industry.

    You will be passionate about the equine industry and progressing your skills in the field of veterinary nursing, taking initiative to learn new skills and take on new tasks within a dynamic and changing environment.

    The small, close-knit team is comprised of highly dedicated individuals with a drive to improve the welfare of horses, patient care and provide the highest- quality imaging services in the country. We are looking for someone who is a quick learner, adaptable and is self-motivated.

    You will also have:

  • Completion of a relevant Certificate III, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in assisting veterinarians with a range of clinical procedures in accordance with relevant policies and standard operating procedures
  • Established organisational skills demonstrated by the ability to meet deadlines and effectively balance competing demands with appropriate problem-solving initiative in a professional manner
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to liaise professionally across all levels with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent written communication skills with demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and under general direction within a busy environment as part of a team.
