Job description

Where would you be working? M &CS: a department with an international outlook & a focus on the future

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (M&CS) is the largest department of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and one of the largest departments in the Netherlands in Mathematics, Data Science, and Computer Science and we are still growing. Currently M&CS has approximately 450 employees with more than 100 scientific staff (assistant, associate, and full professors) and more than 200 PhD and EngD students. The department has research collaborations with the other departments at TU/e, with many organizations in the Brainport region, and with universities and companies in the Netherlands and abroad. Together M&CS staff and students strongly contribute to innovation in science and engineering by performing both fundamental and applied research. M&CS staff, participates in many national and international research consortia. This is reflected in the rich portfolio of projects and grants that M&CS research staff have acquired (including ERC and national level personal grants, H2020, NWO, and industry co-funded projects). As a department offers high-quality bachelor and master programs, all taught in English, and hosts more than 2500 students in their programs. On top of this, the department offers courses and teaching at the other departments of TU/e. Teaching and Research in our department doesn't stay purely theoretical, as is clearly reflected in the number of successful spin- off companies.

M&CS is organized in three different domains: mathematics, computer science, and data science. Each domain consists of several clusters. The mathematics domain has three clusters: CASA (Center for Analysis, Scientific Computing, and Applications), DM (Discrete Mathematics), and SPOR (Statistics, Probability, and Operations Research). The domain of computer science is organized in five different clusters: ALGA (Algorithms, Geometry and Applications), FSA (Formal System Analysis), IRIS (Interconnected Resource-aware Intelligent Systems), SEC (Security), and SET (Software Engineering and Technology). Data science has three clusters: DAI (Data and Artificial Intelligence), PA (Process Analytics), and VIS (Visualization).

Job requirements

Who are you?

The university is in the process of redesigning the bachelor educational programs in accordance with the 2030 vision of the university that aims to educate future-proof engineers. Distinguishing features of all these curricula are the use of challenge-based learning, individualized learning paths and development of professional and personal skills. The new curricula will start September 2023. The MCS department is therefore redesigning its three Bachelor programs as well. Hence, we are looking for eight university teachers to strengthen the team and to teach our students how to become future proof engineers. Our department plays an important role within the university in innovations in teaching and the development of educational software tools.

Do you have a background in one of our domains: Computer Science, Data Science, or Mathematics? Are you looking forward to adopting a variety of roles from teaching courses in our bachelor programs, contributing to courses in our master programs, supervising Bachelor End Projects, and innovating teaching, to the development of educational software tools? Do you have a PhD or EngD degree (or are you close to obtaining one)? Do you already have a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) or a similar teaching qualification (for example BKO/MKO/SKO from a Dutch HBO), or are you willing to obtain one? Do you have a strong affinity with teaching or coaching groups of students? Are you enthusiastic about contributing to the professional and personal development of our Bachelor and Master students, imparting knowledge as well as professional skills and are you a real team player? Then you may have what it takes to be successful at M&CS.

For our Mathematics domain we are specifically interested in university teachers with a strong background in one or two of the following topics: calculus, linear algebra, statistics, and probability. For our Computer Science Domain, we seek university teachers with a strong background in one or two of the following topics: computer systems, operating systems, networks, security, algorithms, programming, and formal methods. We are particularly interested in candidates that can also contribute to the development of educational software and tools; proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C/C++, and Python is hence a plus. For Data Science we are looking for university teachers with a strong background in one or two of the following topics: machine learning, deep learning, text mining, data bases and visualization. For all three domains we welcome teachers that can also impart innovation, collaboration & project management skills to our students.

As all our programs are taught in English, demonstratable knowledge of the English language is important (Level C2).

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary position (for 3 years) as a university teacher with ample opportunities to grow and develop. We expect some of the positions to become permanent in the future.

As a university teacher we expect you to keep up to date with the latest scientific developments in our field, but we do not expect you to contribute to these scientific developments. There is time allocated for keeping up to date, but there is no time allocated for doing scientific research in these positions, the positions are not assistant/associate professorships. We explicitly also invite people looking for parttime opportunities to apply.

Furthermore we offer:

  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self- aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.
  • Information and application
