Åbo Akademi University is looking for a university lecturer in Educational sciences with an emphasis on internationalisation from 1.1.2023 (or by agreement) to 31.12.2023. The positions are placed within the lecturer education programmes at the Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies (FPV) in Vaasa.

The Faculty is a dynamic and boundary-breaking environment in which a wide range of research is conducted, including research within the University's minority profile. Education is one of the main subjects of the faculty. The subject's research and teaching are conducted in relation to Åbo Akademi University's profile as a leading minority research university.

The faculty aims at raising its international profile. This aim is realised through the Nordic profile in the strategy of Åbo Akademi, and through participation in the global program GINTL. In both, the aim is to strengthen the international visibility and identity of Åbo Akademi and establish new international educational research and development partnerships. The goal is also to prepare an international strategy for FPV where ÅA's basic values of being a Swedish-speaking and Nordic-oriented Finnish university can be strengthened by increased and expanded internationalization.

Job description The university lecturer's tasks include mapping and supporting established networks, as well as developing new international educational, research and development partnerships for an increased international profile at the faculty. The university lecturer is expected to participate actively in establishing the faculty as a Nordic actor, and to participate in the national collaboration within the global program GINTL, and through assignments abroad create collaborations with international stakeholders. The tasks also include teaching pedagogy and didactics, supervising teaching practice in lecturer education and supervising and reviewing examinations at bachelor's and master's theses, mainly in the English language master's degree program in Teaching and Learning (TLearn).

The university lecturer is covered by the system with total working hours of 1612 hours per year and the tasks are defined and followed up in more detail in an annual work plan.

In the case of new employment, a probationary period is applied.

Eligibility conditions and assessment The position requires a doctoral degree in the subject area or related subject and pedagogical competence. Good knowledge of and experience in lecturer education is an advantage for the position. Good knowledge of English is requried for the position. International work experience, including the Nordic countries, and/or work within an international degree programme as well as initiative ability and good ability to work together are seen as meritorious.

When assessing and comparing applicants for the position, the following criteria are taken into account in the order of priority below:

  • Scientific competence, which includes research credentials such as scientific publications in the field.
  • Pedagogical competence, especially teaching and supervision experience at university level and in addition experience of teaching planning and development, university pedagogical studies or equivalent that is assessed in accordance with the rector's decision on pedagogical competence for lecturers and researchers at Åbo Akademi University (20.6.2012).
  • Interactive competence that covers ability to cooperate in collegial manner and administrative ability and experience.
  • Language The language requirements at Åbo Akademi University are defined in Section 78 of the University Act (558/2009) and in § 1 and 2 the Åbo Akademi University internal language instructions (25.2.2010).

    For teaching position, native Finnish citizens are required to have excellent proficiency in Swedish (written and oral) and sufficient proficiency in Finnish.

    Foreigners and non-native Finnish citizens are exempt from the requirement to have knowledge of Swedish and Finnish. As the administrative and teaching language of the university is primarily Swedish, the person appointed is expected to acquire such knowledge of Swedish during their employment, so that they will be able to successfully participate in teaching and administrative tasks in Swedish in the future. The university will actively offer support for learning Swedish.

    Oral and written knowledge of English is necessary for managing the duties of the position successfully.

In addition, there is a salary component based on personal work performance, according to the general collective agreement for universities.
