POSITION DETAILS
The Office of Environmental, Health, Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) is committed to fostering a safe and healthy environment for the CUNY community and to reducing the University's risks and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and University policies and procedures as well as continuing to build an integrated CUNY-wide environmental, health, safety and risk management system.
The University Health and Safety Director is a leadership position in EHSRM that oversees all aspects of health and safety throughout CUNY providing health and safety leadership of academic and administrative operations. They are responsible for developing and managing Health and safety policies, programs, training, emergency notification, risk minimization, and regulatory compliance throughout the University. This position is essential and reports to the Senior University Director of EHSRM.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Responds to health and safety incidents and concerns, tracking trends and statistics to minimize future risk.
Implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards.
Conducts periodic, and as need be, campus audits to minimize risks, identify opportunities for improvement, and manage compliance with health and safety regulations, policies, protocols, programs, and procedures.
Inspects laboratories, art and theater, plus related operational facilities to ensure safe operating conditions that comply with federal, state, and city requirements.
Monitors communicable disease guidance, alerts, and incidents, including chairing the CUNY Infectious Disease Committee.
Serves as CUNY's liaison to governmental and non-governmental entities for health and safety matters.
Performs routine and non-routine industrial hygiene exposure monitoring.
Manages fire safety compliance
NOTES:
Until further notice, work will be performed in a hybrid manner with 70% onsitepresence.
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day ofemployment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience is required. An advanced degree in environmental science, risk management, industrial hygiene, chemistry, or related engineering, public or business management discipline is preferred. Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, New York State and City regulations, and a familiarity with current applicable standards and procedures is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Safety, Public Health, Industrial Hygiene or Science.
Certification as a Safety Professional and/or Industrial Hygiene.
Detailed knowledge of applicable health and safety regulations, requirements and best practices.
Excellent oral communication skills to promote a positive, proactive health and safety program in a complex environment.
Detail oriented with strong analytical, evaluative, research, and writing skills.
Strong computer skills and knowledge of word processing, PowerPoint, database management and spreadsheet development.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Manages and provides leadership in academic and administrative operations regarding environmental health and safety; supervises the application and enforcement of all federal, state, and local environmental health and safety regulations, and other University policies.
Establishes environmental health and safety protocols to minimize risks
Oversees inspections of all facilities, including research and teaching laboratories, to ensure safe operating conditions
Manages biological, chemical, and radioactive waste disposal programs
Provides for appropriate faculty, staff, and student training programs and communications
Selects and implements techniques for identifying hazards, assessing risks, and conducting investigations
Facilitates faculty and administration participation in projects with environmental health and safety implications
Plans and formulates environmental health and safety policies and coordinates efforts with University-wide programs and policies
Responds to environmental health and safety complaints
Maintains records of, and reports, required information related to environmental health and safety matters
Performs related duties as assigned.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022
City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the Emblem Health HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.
After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period. If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day. Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period.
An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to Emblem Health. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by Emblem Health before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the Emblem Health website.
