  • Founded in 1885 the Department of Geography and Regional Research is the oldest and largest geography department in Austria. It is home to more than 80 researchers and non-academic staff in nine working groups, as well as more than 3,000 students. Since its foundation, it has continuously expanded into new fields for teaching and research within both human and physical geography. This interdisciplinary basis in social and natural sciences provides a dynamic and inspiring environment for researchers to address critical societal challenges of our generation.

    The position is assigned to the newly established Working Group Urban Studies. The Group pursues research on the complexity and the interactions of social, ecological and technical processes in as well as their impacts on the urban system. The Group works both conceptually-theoretically and empirically on urban sustainability transformations and city-specific challenges with the overall aim of contributing to the development of sustainable cities.

    We offer a PhD position in an inspiring inter- and transdisciplinary research environment with the opportunity to become part of the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy.

    The announcement is made for four years, whereby the employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of four years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

    - Diploma or Master degree in Geography, Environmental Sciences, Sustainable Development, Science and Technology, or a related field - Interdisciplinary background in urban studies, with a focus on environmental or technology studies, or related topics - Good knowledge of quantitative research methods, statistics, modelling and GIS - Experience in conducting empirical research (e.g. in the course of the Master thesis) - Excellent command of written and spoken English, working knowledge of German is required or to be acquired, additional languages such as French or Spanish are an asset
