Posting Summary

Rutgers Correctional Health Care is seeking Per Diem Mental Health Staff Nurse for the Southwoods State Prison located in Bridgeton, New Jersey.

The Staff Nurse demonstrates competency in assessment and identification of the psychological and physical health of adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) all population groups and their personal strengths. Identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.

Among the key duties of this position are the following: Gives clinical care and manages all aspects of nursing care for inmates in the Department of Corrections' (DOC) facilities including adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) and their family. Uses psychiatric standards of nursing practice and classification of mental disorders: to develop inmate treatment plans with specific goals and interventions delineating nursing actions unique to each inmate's needs. Implements nursing actions that promote, maintain or restore physical and mental health of all age groups. Evaluates inmate responses in collaboration with multi-disciplinary care providers to ensure quality inmate care. Performs additional duties that are directly related to the workings of the milieu and its safety, as demonstrated by documentation in specific paperwork and by supervisory observations.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing Minimum of one (1) year of psychiatric nursing experience.

Certifications/Licenses

CPR Certification. License to practice in the State of New Jersey

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Computer literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or its equivalent. is required.

Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment

As a first responder must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Physically able to lift and carry upstairs an emergency treatment bag that can weigh up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds). Typing, ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments, ability to speak clearly and write proficiently is essential, extensive reading required, extended sitting is required, intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities ability to move from unit to unit within correctional facilities, frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls, manual dexterity and mobility for charting, hearing and sight are essential, ability to speak clearly is required, may be required to travel within the state, ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions.

Immunization Requirements

Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
