Posting Summary

Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is seeking a Physician Specialist I for the Northern State Prison Facility, located in Newark, New Jersey. Under the direction of the Medical and Health Services Director, the Physician Specialist I is responsible for providing medical services to inmates of the Department of Corrections, which are consistent with community standards of care. This position serves as a liaison for clinical matters with medical providers outside of the system and be available to provide on-call services.

Among the key duties of this position are the following: Serves as the Medical Director of the site and supervises other Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners at the site. Reports to the assigned state prison at designated hour to examine referred patients. Provides emergency care, routine medical care, preventive medical care and education to patients. Assures implementation and ongoing status of on-site chronic clinics. Refers patients to appropriate Physician consults. Prescribes medications from the formulary for the inmate's healthcare needs.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Experienced in a primary care specialty.

Certifications/Licenses

Licensed physician in the State of New Jersey. Current DEA and CDS registration. Board certified, eligible, or qualified by the state laws/regulations to practice medicine. Valid Driver's License.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Computer literacy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Typing, ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments. Ability to move from unit to unit within the Correctional facilities. Frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls. Intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities. Manual dexterity and mobility for charting (typing). Lifting and pulling up to 50 pounds. The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). Hearing is essential. May be required to travel within the state. Ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Able to function in a stressful environment and relate well to the patients, security staff and health care team members. A generally crisis oriented, secure environment working with adults, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening and assaultive behaviors. Physician must be able to function in a stressful environment and relate well to the patients, security staff and health care team members. Handle emergency and crisis situations. Incumbent must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, strains. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.

Special Conditions

Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation. Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.

Immunization Requirements
