UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1, UCD School of Earth Sciences, Fixed term post: 01 September 2021 to 30 September 2022

Applications are invited for a Fixed term post: 01 September 2021 to 30 September 2022 post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Earth Sciences

This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.

The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

The objective of the research in this post-doctoral role is to constrain the 3D structural, stratigraphic and geochemical framework of the Maarmorilik zinc-lead mining district in western Greenland. The work will include economic resource outline modelling, integrative 3D geological structure and horizon modelling, spatial data analysis and assessment of geochemical data, structural analysis, an analysis of timing relationships, and how these relate to mineralisation in 3D.

This collaborative research project is funded by industry, and the research is part of the research programme of the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG). iCRAG brings together a team of researchers representing the full geosciences spectrum with a clear focus on the economic impact of the wider geosciences sector. iCRAG is funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and co funded under the European Regional Development Fund together with industry partners. The Centre is administered in UCD and represents a collaboration between UCD, TCD, NUIG, UCC, DIAS, Teagasc and NUIM, and a variety of domestic and international industry partners.

In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:

  • Conduct research on surface and subsurface data from the Maarmorilik zinc- lead district in western Greenland under the supervision of Dr Koen Torremans and John Güven.
  • Perform state of the art 3D analysis and modelling of the orebodies and the structural and stratigraphic framework of the Maarmorilik district and Black Angel Mine.
  • Improve our understanding of the complex geological structure and tectono- stratigraphic framework in the district as it developed through time, and how this macroscale framework relates to formation, deformation, and mobilisation of the ore and orebodies.
  • Develop an integrated 3D model of the structural-stratigraphic-geochemical framework at Black Angel Mine and the Maarmorilik district.
  • Collaborate closely on the research with industry and a national geological survey.
  • Salary: €38,631 - €41,025 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on 27 July 2021

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 17:00hrs (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.

UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CV's submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.
