    In the scope of the project UIDB/00195/2020 - Projeto estratégico da unidade de investigação FibEnTech

    A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for BSc: BI, within the Research Project titled “UIDB/00195/2020”, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), IP/MCTES, through national funds (PIDDAC), taking place at the research unit Fibers Materials and Environmental Technologies (FibEnTech) of the University of Beira Interior (https: // www. ubi.pt/entidade/FibEnTech), under the following conditions:

    2. Objetives – Study of the oxidation of recalcitrant compounds from winery effluents by electrochemical techniques

    3. Requirements for admission and hiring: Hold a BSc degree in Industrial Chemistry or Chemistry and meet the conditions to be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to a MSc degree.

    If the academic degree required for this application has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, the provisions of Decreto-Lei 66/2018, of August 16th and Portaria No. 33/2019, of January 25th, must be complied with.

    The proof of registration in the MSc degree is required for the fellowhip contractualization.

    4. Work plan: Portugal is a large producer of wine and alcoholic beverages, becoming very important in recent decades, either by the quantity relative to the size of the country, or essentially by the variety and quality. Thus, it is extremely important that the wine effluents, produced in the various stages of the production process, are treated in such a way that their high organic load, recalcitrant compounds, and toxic products are mostly eliminated, allowing the treated effluent to be the reused.

    The composition of these effluents includes alcohols, sugars, carboxylic acids, and various kinds of ions, as well as different recalcitrant compounds such as phthalic acid, tyrosol and catechin. One of the possible treatments of these effluents is the anodic oxidation, to essentially oxidize the recalcitrant compounds.

    The objective of this work is to study, by electrochemical techniques, especially by cyclic voltammetry, the electrochemical stability of the various recalcitrant compounds, in aqueous media, in order to be able to predict/perceive which ones will be easier or harder to electrodegrade, as well as their metabolites; it is intended to know the potentials to which they undergo degradation, with a view to an economically more viable electrochemical treatment, where the minimum potential for the degradation of the compounds will be applied.

    The work will be developed in three months according to the following tasks:

    T1 (2 months): Perform cyclic voltammetry experiments with different recalcitrant compounds, present in winery effluents, to study their electrochemical stability and of the metabolites obtained during their respective oxidation.

    T2 (1 month): Perform cyclic voltammetry experiments with mixtures of recalcitrant compounds, present in the winery effluents, to study the influence of the composition on the electrochemical stability of each one of the different compounds.

    6. Work location: The work will be developed at the Fibers Materials and Environmental Technologies (FibEnTech), Department of Chemistry, Faculdade de Ciências, Rua Marquês d'Ávila e Bolama, 6201-001 Covilhã under the scientific supervision of Doctor Maria de Lurdes Franco Ciríaco, lciriaco@ubi.pt.

    7. Fellowship duration and conditions – The fellowship is opened for 3 months, starting on 2nd January 2022. The activity is in regime of exclusive dedication in accordance with the RBIUBI. The fellowship may be renewed for a period of 3 months, not exceeding 6 months, nor end of the project.

    8. Benefits – A monthly maintenance allowance will be granted in accordance with the Annex I of the RBIUBI, with the amount of 835.98 € according to the updated values that can be consulted at https: // www. fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can choose to be covered by the voluntary social insurance. These values will be added to the amount of monthly maintenance allowance.

    9. Eligibility criteria – The evaluation and selection processes involve three steps:

    1. Verification of eligibility of applications based on defined admission requirements.

    2. Curriculum analysis of eligible candidates, with a rating from 0 to 20, based on the following criteria:

    a) Graduate degree classification (weighting: 40%)

    b) Average grade of Master course curricular units related with the work plan (weighting: 30%)

    c) Proven performance of laboratory activities or others that involve the execution of chemical analyzes for the characterization of water or effluents and effluents treatment by electrochemical processes, in which a classification between 0 and 20 values ​​will be attributed to each one of the candidates (weighting: 30%).

    The grade of the curriculum analysis will be calculated through the weighted average of the grades obtained in points a) to c).

    3. Interview with the two candidates classified in first and second places in the curricular analysis, in which a classification between 0 and 20 points will be attributed to each one of the candidates.

    The final classification will be calculated through the weighted average of the curriculum analysis classification (weighting: 70%) and the grade obtained in the interview (weighting: 30%). In the event of a tie for first place in the final classification, the candidate who obtained the best classification in the interview will be chosen.

    13. Publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation process will be published in a sorted list, by the final classification obtained, and posted in a visible and public place of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Beira Interior. The candidate(s) will be notified of the decision by e-mail.

    14. Complaint and Appeal Procedures: After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.

    The proposal for the final ranking of the candidates will constitute a reserve list for selection for a period of 3 months.
