Two-year Postdoc(s) in Clinical Proteomics at Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research

Copenhagen University

March 1, 2022

Two-year postdoctoral stipends are available in the Clinical Proteomics group at Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research. CPR has been established at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen to promote basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of medical relevance. CPR is generously funded by NNF but scientifically independent. The Center comprises a wide range of expertise and resources including proteomics, genomics, structural biology, cell signaling and characterization in disease mechanisms and aspires to be world-leading in its field.

The clinical proteomics group at CPR is led by Professor Matthias Mann, a leading authority in mass spectrometry-based proteomics with more than 240,000 citations and an h-index over 240 according to Google Scholar, making him one of the most highly cited researchers worldwide.

For more information about the clinical proteomics group please see here.

Project descriptions We are seeking two candidates. The first candidate will focus on body fluid proteomics. Body fluid proteomics has the potential to change modern clinical diagnostics but real-world experience in a clinical setting is limited. We are exploring and applying state of the art mass-spectrometry based proteomics in range of diagnostic purposes including multiple myeloma, bleeding disorders, and infectious diseases together with clinicians at Rigshospitalet, one of the leading hospitals in Denmark (www. The clinical proteomics task force is led by Matthias Mann and Associate Professor and Medical Doctor Nicolai J. Wewer Albrechtsen and currently comprises two post docs, a research assistant and a laboratory technician. You will have the possibility to interact with both clinicians and experts in proteomics and bioinformatics to push proteomics toward real world clinical application.

The second candidate, we are looking for will focus more on liver diseases. Nicolai J. Wewer Albrechtsen's research focus is in metabolic conditions such as liver diseases and diabetes. In this regard, we are also seeking an individual to investigate liver diseases and its cellular signaling pathways using state-of the art mass-spectrometry based proteomics. The successful applicant will investigate liver specific proteomic and phosphoproteomics changes during a standardized meal or during pharmacological intervention in healthy subjects and in subjects with liver disease (see more at https: // The project is led and coordinated by Nicolai J. Wewer Albrechtsen.

We are looking for excellent, motivated, and creative candidates to work together with Nicolai J. Wewer Albrechtsen, Matthias Mann and our proteomic, bioinformatic and medical team on proteomic analyses in a clinical setting. You will be part of a dynamic group composed of PhD students and post docs with diverse scientific backgrounds including experts in mass-spectrometry based proteomic and clinicians.

You will be mainly working on performing and analyzing blood and liver tissue from ongoing and future studies using state-of art technologies and integrating this with clinical data. If successful, you will contribute to the discovery and deployment of novel biomarkers that will make a real difference to patient's health. Prior experience with mass-spectrometry based proteomics and bioinformatics such as python programming would be beneficial. You must be able to work independently and open-minded about learning new techniques.

Profile Specifically, we are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic scientists with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • The candidate is required to have a PhD in the natural or medical science.
  • Excellent scientific track record, including at least one publication as first author in a high quality, peer reviewed international journal
  • Prior experience with mass-spectrometry based proteomics
  • Prior experience with programming (e.g., R or Python) is desirable
  • You must be able to work independently
  • You have an active interest in mass-spectrometry
  • Interest in metabolism (preferably liver diseases) is preferred but not required
  • You need to be able to work effectively in an international and multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated English writing and other communication skills are advantageous.
  • Place of employment The employment is at CPR (www., University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. The research environment at CPR is vibrant and ambitious but also supportive. Currently about 30 different nationalities are represented. The Center comprises modern laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities in protein science and related areas. The institute regularly organizes seminars with high-profile international speakers as well as other events.

Terms of employment The employment as postdoc is for two years with a possibility for renewal. Starting date is 1 May 2022 or after agreement.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Currently, the monthly salary starts at 35,003 DKK/ approx. 4,667 Euro (October 2021 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of 11 December 2019.
