The North Carolina State University Cooperative Tree Improvement Program (www. treeimprovement.org) is one of the largest Tree Improvement programs in the world. The Program started in 1956 to genetically improve southern pines. The program remains strong with aggressive breeding, research, education, and outreach efforts. Currently, the Program has 31 members, representing large forestry companies, small landowners, state and federal forest agencies, consulting firms, nursery vendors, real estate investment trusts, timberland investment management organizations, and forest foundations. The Program continuously works to discover innovative ways to accelerate tree breeding, while increasing efficiency.

Essential Job Duties

The Cooperative Tree Improvement Program in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University invites applications for a research associate position as Tree Improvement Manager.

The major responsibilities include:

  • Participate in and help lead research projects carried out by the program faculty, staff, and graduate students.
  • Take the leadership role in developing and managing the breeding and testing programs of the Cooperative. Duties include developing and implementing breeding, testing, and selection plans; assigning breeding, testing, and selection tasks to full members; working with Cooperative members to accomplish breeding, testing, and selection assignments; updating the database with current data; and management of seed, pollen, and graft inventories.
  • Assist in analyzing and summarizing data and writing technical documents, including manuscripts for publication.
  • Make technical presentations at professional conferences and Cooperative meetings.
  • Advise cooperators on seed orchard management.
  • Extensive travel to visit with Cooperative members and to field sites, including the Cooperative's breeding center in Georgia.
  • Coordinate the genotyping of orchard and progeny trial samples.
  • Coordinate the implementation of the annual breeding plan at the Cooperator's breeding center in Georgia.
  • Other Responsibilities

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • MS (or BS with minimum of 3 years of experience) in forestry, plant sciences, natural resources, or other relevant biological or social science.
  • Other Required Qualifications

  • The candidate must be able to manage program goals (manage the operational tree improvement program and delivery of results) in a specified time period with minimal supervision.
  • Strong operational tree improvement and analytical skills are needed.
  • A willingness to take on new challenges is essential.
  • The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills and interest in working with a wide range of individuals and organizations including students, faculty, forest landowners, consultants, forest industry, and public agencies in the southern US.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Excel is required, as is working knowledge and/or expertise with R statistical environment and SQL (or other data analysis and management software).
  • Attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and fluency in oral and written communications are essential.
  • A team-player attitude is required, including the ability to motivate coworkers and students, maintain strong positive morale and “can-do” perspective, and promote an environment of strong work ethic.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with all aspects of breeding, progeny test design and implementation, and seed orchard management are preferred.
  • Working knowledge and/or expertise with ArcGIS, SQL, R, and ASReml are preferred.
  • Capabilities in quantitative genetic analyses would be a strong benefit.
