  • The National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), part of the Sorbonne University Alliance, constitutes an exceptional site of research in the heart of Paris. The activity will be carried out within the CNRS unit « Physiologie moléculaire et Adaptation » (CNRS UMR7221) of the « Adaptations du Vivant » MNHN Department. The candidate will benefit from the multidisciplinary training offered within the doctoral school « Science de la nature et de l'homme : évolution et écologie » (ED227). She·He will have the opportunity to use the imaging platforms of the MNHN, the Paris-Seine Institute of Biology and the Jacques Monod Institute.

The neck, specific to tetrapods, emerged congruent with limbs during the vertebrate water-to-land transition. This morphological innovation resulted from the adaptation of the musculoskeletal system and required profound developmental rearrangements. In vertebrates, the musculoskeletal systems of the head and trunk have different embryonic origins and their formation depends on distinct molecular mechanisms. The neck region constitutes a transition zone of mixed embryonic origin at the head-trunk interface and the morphogenetic actors regulating its formation remain elusive. Taking advantages of the genetic tracing and conditional inactivation strategies in the mouse, the PhD student will explore the function of candidate genes in neck morphogenesis. Through the analysis of different key vertebrate species, she·he will compare the spatiotemporal expression of molecular actors of neck development and will study conservation and divergence in genetic programs taking place at the head-trunk transition. The data will permit to elucidate the developmental and evolutionary origins of the tetrapod neck and will bring new insights for the understanding of some human congenital disorders in which the neck musculoskeletal system is specifically affected.
