  • The thesis will be carried out in cotutelle between the SUBATECH laboratory and The University of Melbourne (UniMelb): the candidate will be enrolled in the PhD program of the IMT Atlantique Nantes school of the SUBATECH laboratory and in the PhD program of the UniMelb School of Physics.

    The Xenon team at SUBATECH is strongly involved in the search for dark matter and rare events within the international XENON collaboration, which operates the XENONnT experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The group contributes to the R&D and sensitivity studies of DARWIN in the search for rare events.

    The School of Physics at the University of Melbourne has recently joined the DARWIN collaboration. Its members have strong expertise in theoretical modelling and data interpretation, including direct detection searches for dark matter and physics beyond the Standard Model. The School hosts the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics and is part of a consortium of universities supporting the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory.

    The student will be a member of the XENON and DARWIN collaborations. He/she will analyse data from the XENONnT experiment and integrate the XENONnT simulation and analysis frameworks with new tools developed explicitly to test the luminous dark matter hypothesis. The future PhD student will also participate in the R&D activities of the DARWIN project.

    The PhD candidates will benefit from the combined expertise of the project supervisors and the integration in two research environments.

    One PhD project will be based at the SUBATECH laboratory in Nantes with a minimum 12-month stay at the University of Melbourne. The other PhD project will be based at the University of Melbourne with a minimum 12-month stay at the SUBATECH laboratory in Nantes.

    The student primarily based at the SUBATECH laboratory will be a member of the XENON and DARWIN collaborations. He/She is expected to analyze the data coming from the XENONnT experiment and to integrate the simulation and analysis frameworks of the XENONnT with new tools developed explicitly to test the Luminous Dark Matter hypothesis.

    The student primarily based at the University of Melbourne will collaborate with the SUBATECH members in integrating the Luminous Dark Matter model into the DARWIN simulation framework. He/She will be member of the DARWIN collaboration. He/She will study and simulate all the possible sources of backgrounds and develop novel analysis method to increase the sensitivity of the DARWIN experiment to the Luminous Dark Matter hypothesis. Both students will also participate in R&D activities for the DARWIN project.

    The PhD candidates will benefit from the combined expertise of the project supervisors, and the embedding into two research environments.

    L'existence de la matière noire est connue grâce aux effets gravitationnels, mais sa nature est encore totalement inconnue, et sa caractérisation est l'un des principaux défis théoriques et expérimentaux de la physique moderne des particules et des astroparticules. Plusieurs propositions de candidats ont été avancées au fil du temps : parmi elles, la matière noire lumineuse. Ces dernières années, ce modèle a suscité beaucoup d'intérêt car il pourrait expliquer l'observation récente par l'expérience XENON1t d'un signal électronique encore inexpliqué.

    À présente le successeur de XENON1T, XENONnT est en phase de prise de données. Il consiste en une chambres de projection temporelle au xénon liquide trois fois plus grande de son predecessor et donc plus sensible à la recherche d'événements rares. Cette technologie figure parmi les technologies les plus prometteuses pour la recherche proposée : elle continuera à jouer un rôle de premier plan dans ce domaine de recherche avec l'expérience de future génération DARWIN.

    Dans ce contexte, l'objectif principal de ce projet est la recherche de matière noire lumineuse avec les données de l'experience XENONnT et la preparation de l'experience de future generation, DARWIN.

    Additional comments

    The candidate should have a Master degree in physics. Proven experience in the field of particle or astroparticle physics, good computer skills and previous experience in simulations, data processing and analysis will be an asset. A good command of the English language is required.

    This offer is part of a "PhD joint call" between SUBATECH and The University of Melbourne. In this context, two theses are proposed within the same framework (over the same period, and on the same global theme), of which this one foresees at least 12 months at UniMelb and the rest at SUBATECH, while the other foresees at least 12 months at SUBATECH and the rest at UniMelb. The two PhD students will exchange and sometimes work together throughout the two theses.
