Position title: Turner-Evans Lab Research Specialist

Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a research specialist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Dan Turner-Evans, the research specialist will coordinate the setup and maintenance of the Turner- Evans Lab, train students in experimental techniques, and perform research related to the lab's aim of linking neural network connectivity and cellular biophysics to neural circuit function.

The responsibilities for this research specialist include organizing and stocking the lab space and maintaining, creating, and requesting fly stocks. The specialist is also expected to be proficient in confocal and fluorescence microscopy, and will be expected to become proficient in use of the lab's multiphoton microscopes. The specialist needs to be able to perform adult brain dissections and immunohistochemistry. They will work with existing lab members to perform fluorescence in situ hybridization, and use genetic tools to visualize tagged ion channels and receptors. The specialist will also be required to work with and train students, and generally act in accordance with the lab's commitment to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in scientific research. Additionally, the research specialist will independently perform experiments and generate figures for publications and presentations.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

BA/BS (or an equivalent foreign degree) in neuroscience, biology, physics, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, or another related discipline and at least 16 years of post degree research experience.
