This is the Layout Editor position at The Northern Light, the student newspaper at the University of Alaska Anchorage. This position works up to 20hrs/week in the academic year and is eligible for up to 40hrs/week in the summer with a starting salary of $12.03/hour.
Duties:About The Northern Light:
The Northern Light is the University of Alaska Anchorage's student publication, funded by both student media fees and advertising sales. The publication is primarily text based and strives to be digital-first, publishing stories, audio and video content online in a timely manner. Stories are also published in a printed paper. Copies of The Northern Light are distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Total distribution is around 2,000 copies per print. Job Posting Summary:
Layout Editor must combine stories, graphics, photos and other visual elements into a tabloid-size layout for printing. The Layout Editor will develop and publish web pages and interactive multimedia for the online edition of The Northern Light. Must be able to work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for print production, and will be asked to make website edits as needed. Develop creative graphics and visual elements for stories based on assignments and initiative. Work with advertising staff to insert and correctly size advertisements for each issue. Work with graphic designer to ensure proper print quality of graphics and ads. Meet assigned deadlines and attend all meetings and training that pertain to layout. Work cooperatively with all editors, advertising representatives and other staff members, and work with editors to maintain a consistent look and quality to the newspaper's sections. Be receptive to appropriate feedback regarding work for the newspaper as well as other duties as assigned. This position reports with occasional supervision to the executive editor.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Applicants must demonstrate creative ability in graphic illustration and design; be familiar with newspaper and layout design principles; be able to work on deadline (Saturday & Sunday) and work cooperatively with others; and be proficient with Adobe's InDesign, with working knowledge of other Adobe Creative Suite programs, such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Successful applicants will have knowledge of basic web coding, including HTML and CSS.

Required Education or Training:
To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.
