The Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures at James Madison
University invites applications for a tenure-track in Spanish at the rank of
Assistant Professor to begin August 2022. We are seeking candidates prepared
to teach language courses at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum.
This hire forms part of a multi-department cohort hire in Latinx studies in
the College of Arts and Letters, the largest academic unit at JMU. Home to ten
academic departments, several interdepartmental programs, and 269 full-time
faculty, Arts and Letters is the intellectual home of humanities, social
sciences, communication, and media programs at JMU. Our Latinx cohort hire
will bring six and perhaps as many as seven new colleagues specializing in
media, rhetoric, communication, creative writing, sociology, and romance
languages. This cohort will join recent hires in Latinx US history, politics,
and anthropology to build on already existing strengths across a variety of
fields and intellectual areas. Harrisonburg is home to a vital Latinx
community with whom JMU has a deep history of interconnection. This is an
exciting time to join a college-wide effort to enhance research, teaching, and
scholarship in this vital area of work.

The Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers 11
languages. It consists of 27 full-time faculty committed to fostering
relationships between faculty, students, staff, alumni, and community. Our

Duties and Responsibilities
We are seeking candidates prepared to teach language courses at all levels of
the undergraduate curriculum. We are particularly interested in candidates
that have research interests that focus on the Central American and/or
Latina/o/x populations and engage the broad contours of Latinx Studies.

a strong record of excellence in teaching Spanish at the university level, as
well as courses in Hispanic, Latin American, or Latinx literatures and
cultures. Experience in teaching Introduction to Literatures in Spanish
literature is a plus. Applicants must have native or near native fluency in
Spanish and English. Familiarity with the use of multimedia technology in the
classrooms is preferred.
Candidates must demonstrate their potential to maintain active scholarly
research programs. A Ph.D. at the time of appointment is required, although
the Department will consider exceptional applicants at the advanced

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding
campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime
prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting
policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of
students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and
other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report
includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes
that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property
owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or
immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire
statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-
campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills
held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable
electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and
procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with
other fire safety information.
