Aid in establishing field trials (Fertilizing, tilling, planting, transplanting, watering, etc.) Aid in maintaining field trials (weed management, watering, etc.) Aid in maintenance of insect colonies and greenhouse/lab plants (plant trays weekly, move trays into and out of colonies as needed, water plants, etc.) Aid in harvesting trials. Pick, count and weigh fruit. Visually rate insect damage. Other duties as assigned by supervisors.

This position will support all aspects of field and laboratory research in vegetable entomology. The student will work under the supervision of Dr. Sparks and his technician. The student will aid in establishing and maintaining field plots, sampling of plots for insects and insect damage, harvesting plots, and clean up of fields. Monitoring of microscope for some species. Field work may include transplanting vegetables, hoeing weeds, and other activities associated with production of vegetable crops.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies Physical Demands

Driving. The worker will be required to work in the field in the environmental conditions of south Georgia (hot and high humidity). Lifting is limited, but the worker should be able to carry a 50 pound bag of fertilizer. Most vegetables grow close to the ground and require frequent bending to harvest or sample insects. Good vision is required as much of the insect sampling is done through direct observation of plants.
