Position Details

Reporting to the Manager of Scientific Facilities and Instrumentation, the Temporary Scientific Imaging Support Specialist provides leadership in maintenance and user training for Wesleyan University's imaging facility. This facility serves users in the Departments of Chemistry, Biology, Earth and Environmental Science and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and houses modern confocal, scanning electron (SEM), and transmission electron (TEM) microscopes along with a collection of common light microscopes. This position also includes occasional support for the Biology greenhouse.

Responsibilities include:

Imaging Facility:

Maintain ongoing functionality of the imaging facility microscopes (includes regular cleaning/care of microscopes)

Inform users when microscopes not functional or performing poorly

Repair teaching lab benchtop microscopes

Oversee networking of confocal and data storage (with help from ITS staff)

Manage microscope sign-ups on instrumentation scheduler

Provide standard training to new users of the confocal and electron microscopes

Greenhouse Facility:

Seasonal maintenance (shut down/clean out/power up pad coolers, apply Greenshade whitewash to prep area glass)

Oversee function of vents, coolers, and other mechanicals

Address mechanical issues that arise (including repair /replacement/ retrofitting of vent motors and automatic shade curtains)

Locate replacement parts

Apply pesticides to experimental plants when requested

Sterilize soil when requested

Cooperate with the Faculty Greenhouse Director as required

Coordinate regular greenhouse maintenance tasks with the scientific facilities manager and Wesleyan facilities services while meeting the needs of greenhouse users

Other Duties: Assistance with NMR liquid helium cryostat maintenance/liquefied gas fills.

This is a temporary, non-benefit eligible, position working up to 37.5hrs per week through June 30, 2023.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a scientific field with one year of experience working in a laboratory environment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Demonstrated knowledge in electron and confocal microscopy.

Ability to climb a ladder and lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in a scientific field with two years of experience working in a laboratory environment utilizing modern confocal and electron microscopy.

Experience with student training in an educational environment.

Knowledge and experience with microscope maintenance.

Familiarity with greenhouse operations.
