A Laboratory Technician position is available in the Department of Biology, University of Oxford, to conduct research on insect–symbiont interactions, working with Dr Ailsa McLean.

Many insects have ongoing relationships (symbioses) with bacteria that are passed from mother to offspring. These bacteria can sometimes also be transferred between unrelated individuals, including across species boundaries. We aim to investigate cross-species transfers of symbiotic bacteria, using ladybirds and aphids. The technician will be providing support for this project.

The technician will carry out day-to-day maintenance of insect stock cultures, including growing aphid food plants, and may also collect insects from the field. You will carry out experiments to transfer bacteria between insects and conduct molecular biology work to assess whether bacteria are present in novel hosts. You will participate in experimental work to examine effects of symbionts on insect biology.

The technician will ensure the smooth running of the laboratory throughout the project. Understanding of a working laboratory environment is therefore essential, as is attention to detail and scrupulous record keeping. Experience working with insects in a laboratory setting would be an advantage, as would experience with basic molecular biology techniques (e.g. DNA extraction, PCR). We will encourage the successful candidate to undertake career development activities and training as part of this role.

The University of Oxford is committed to equality and valuing diversity. All applicants will be judged on merit, according to the selection criteria.

This post is full time and available from April 2023.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 20th February, interviews are likely to be scheduled for late February.
