About the Faculty ;

The Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment is home to a broad range of disciplines; delivering teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We also engage in internationally recognised research and knowledge exchange activities from our purpose-built facilities in Oxford. We provide a wide range of technical facilities to support our teaching, research and knowledge exchange activities.

The Construction Lab is situated on the Headington Campus, providing a specialist learning and research environment to students and staff in the Schools of Architecture and the Built Environment.

We are seeking an experienced person to take on the role of Technical Specialist Architecture and Construction to oversee the day to day running of the facility, and to provide technical support for relevant teaching, research and consultancy work. You will be working as part of the Faculty's Experienced Technical Team, supervising students and undertaking testing work as part of research and other projects.

Please refer to the Job Description and Person Specification for the full duties, but in summary;

You will have knowledge of construction & surveying practices and techniques and experience of demonstrating the safe and effective use of machinery and equipment relevant to the setting. You will also have a good understanding of relevant Health and Safety legislation and practice and the ability to prepare, organise and maintain records and the maintenance of equipment to ensure best practice. You will need to be willing to undertake training and development activities, to support the evolution of the Construction Lab to support the dynamic Research and Consultancy work undertaken in the facility.

You will be responsible for the day to day running of the facilities and equipment, including; planning and scheduling work, Health and Safety management, overseeing maintenance schedules and making arrangements for statutory testing. You will maintain risk assessment files, COSHH records and inventories. In addition to the day to day management of the Lab facilities and equipment, you will provide technical support to students and staff, including;

  • Operation of test equipment providing and recording the data, and other technical support needed for research & consultancy projects, working closely with Academic staff.
  • Organisation, preparation and delivery of student demonstrations and practical classes.
  • Assist and advise students in the safe use of the facilities and equipment for their projects and research activities, providing the necessary training and supervision.
  • Organisation, support and provision of Surveying and Field equipment, and overseeing equipment loans.
  • To work as part of the wider Faculty Technical Team, including supporting the Architecture workshop.
  • To coordinate the purchase of consumables and other items, and contributing to the selection and procurement of capital purchases of new equipment.
