2 year fixed term position

Fantastic opportunity to play a key part in supporting innovative research projects. Working under general direction, the Technical Officer (Structures & Natural Resources) works collaboratively with the team to provide assistance with the delivery of fundamental & applied research activities, postgraduate education, undergraduate teaching, as well as involvement from public and private sectors.

As a Technician in the Structures and Natural Resources team, based at our Thebarton Engineering Research Laboratory facility, your role will be to deliver technical support and advice for teaching and research projects to students, academics and research staff in line with the strategic direction of the Faculty.

You will be required to support the day to day operation of the Thebarton research facility which houses a large-scale wind tunnel, combustion-related testing areas and other large-scale research activities. You will be assisting research staff and students in the design, commissioning, and modifications of engineering research test rigs, to maintain safe operations and achieve teaching and research outcomes.

A strong emphasis is placed on safety, positive teamwork, accurate record keeping, effective time management and clear communication skills.

To be successful you will need:

  • Knowledge of Work Health and Safety management systems that apply to an engineering testing/research environment.
  • Recognised competencies and demonstrated experience with using metal workshop machinery and fabrication equipment, working in a customer focused environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with the design, installation, use, maintenance and repair of equipment items related to aerodynamic testing, renewable energy, energy storage and/or combustion technologies, will be an advantage for this position.
  • High-level organisational skills and an ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines, and the ability to prioritise tasks and assignments.
  • Ability to work with general supervision, think creatively and laterally and exercise initiative as appropriate to achieve standards of excellence and monitor on-going performance.
  • Demonstrated high level of computer literacy, and a knowledge of data acquisition, software measurement and control, and 3D printing technologies.
