Technical Officer, Mechanical Engineering

Permanent Whole-time Post

Applications are invited for a whole-time Technical Officer post in the School of Engineering and Architecture, supporting Mechanical Engineering activities in the School and the operation of the Mechanical Workshop. The post-holder will support the delivery of School teaching and research activities in Engineering, including maintenance and operability of teaching laboratories, planning, preparing, developing, delivering and assisting the running of undergraduate and postgraduate laboratory classes; support to research activities; supervision, training and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment in the School; implementation of and monitoring of safety procedures and risk assessments within the School; and operation of advanced equipment. The Mechanical Workshop in the School of Engineering and Architecture is an essential core facility that underpins teaching and research across the entire School, and is the foundation on which the specific discipline of Mechanical Engineering is built. Continuous upgrading of the traditional facilities has transformed the workshop into an advanced manufacturing centre as new technologies became available, such as multi-axis CNC machines, 3D printers, laser cutters, and advanced tool path software for highly complex machining. Traditional manual machining and manufacturing skills are also still a key requirement for much of the work, but much has evolved in the actual manufacturing of tailor-made pieces. The post-holder will engage with researchers and students to fulfil two major tasks: operate the appropriate resources to machine required pieces; support training in the use of a few pieces of equipment that can be operated by students. The Technical Officers will report to the Head of School, with day-to-day operational line management via the Chief Technical Officer.

Please note that Garda vetting and/or an international police clearance check may form part of the selection process.

For an information package including full details of the post, selection criteria and application process see https: // ore.ucc.ie/. The University, at its discretion, may undertake to make an additional appointment(s) from this competition following the conclusion of the process.
