What We Want

The GHRC is seeking a Technical Laboratory Coordinator who will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing daily operational activities of the BL-2, ABSL-2, ACL-2, BL-3, ACL-3, and BSL3-Ag laboratories to maintain a safe, clean and operational lab environment; ensuring adherence to lab standards and practices to maximize safety and operational effectiveness; and assist researchers with sample collection and processing of samples. The preferred candidate will have at least three years of experience in a biocontainment laboratory setting: BSL-2, ACL-2, BSL-3, ACL-3, or BSL-3Ag; experience in biohazard waste management (autoclave/ sterile preparations); experience with and laboratory inventories; and experience working with diverse individuals and students. Position Details - This job requires mobility and agility to move quickly in a dangerous situation. Must be able to undergo and maintain a favorable background investigation and National Select Agent Registration security risk assessment. This job has a potential for safety hazard exposures and infectious disease exposures and requires the ability to work sometimes under challenging conditions (high humidity/temperature, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and noise). Medical evaluation is required at least annually, and full participation in a medical clearance program is required, which includes blood testing and possibly vaccinations. The applicant may be required to take several showers each day, is required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and stand for prolonged periods of time. As needed, work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends or respond to emergency calls after-hours. Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Virology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Three years of experience in a biological laboratory setting with experience in general laboratory operations
  • Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain National Select Agent and Toxin Registration security clearance
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standard laboratory safety procedures including biosafety and hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of scientific equipment associated with biological sciences
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and email software
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to analyze standard operating procedures and give verbal and/or written recommendations
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds

  • Responsibilities:

  • Laboratory Maintenance - Coordinates and oversees the daily operational activities of the BL-2, ABSL-2, ACL-2, BSL-3, ACL-3, and BSL3-Ag laboratories to maintain a safe, clean and operational lab environment. Ensures adherence to lab standards and practices to maximize safety and operational effectiveness. Assists in coordinating day to day laboratory maintenance that includes ordering laboratory supplies, inventory control, performing equipment maintenance and cleaning of lab facilities, and maintenance of laboratory safety manuals. Occasionally runs technical laboratory equipment. Ensures proper storage and handling of biological and chemical materials. Ensures laboratory waste is decontaminated and disposed of properly, including autoclaving materials for removal from biohazard areas. Assists in the annual recertification of laboratory spaces, including room decontamination and certification of equipment. Evaluates existing laboratory facilities and recommends improvements. Assists in the development of procedures for the use of laboratory instrumentation and procedures.

  • Technical Support - Assists researchers with sample collection and processing of samples. Helps researchers operate core facility scientific equipment to analyze research samples.

  • Training and Education - Assists with hands-on laboratory training for new researchers and employees. Assists with the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the facility. Assists research staff with routine safety practices, to ensure building SOPs are enforced. Assists in the development and update of instructional materials for laboratories. Completes an annual health evaluation through the Biosafety Occupational Health Program, to include blood titers, respirator fit testing, and possibly vaccinations. Completes annual Select Agent Program training. Performs other duties as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.
