Position Summary Information
Job Summary/Basic Function
Job Summary: Direct and coordinate of all scenic activities (scenery construction, painting, and props) for departmental productions and serving as facilities manager for other productions from across the university and the community.
Essential Job Functions 1. Serve as Technical Director for Department of Theatre & Dance season (which includes musicals, plays and dance concerts, and other student produced works throughout the academic year); 2. Act as a mentor on student productions; 3. Serve as facility manager for other productions from across the University and the Community; 4. Manage the scene shop; tool and equipment maintenance and replacement; inventory and monitor equipment including lighting, sound and rigging. 5. Ensure safety in all technical activities; 6. Oversee hang and focus; 7. Assist and prepare budgets for departmental shows, handling paperwork, purchase requisitions, and time sheets, and coordinating strikes for productions. 8. Schedule all theatre & dance spaces and productions. 9. Oversee THEA 2110 and THEA 4210: Production and lighting the dance concert.
Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to needs of the university.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education Required: Bachelor's Degree in Theatre or significant work experience will be acceptable in lieu of the degree.
Minimum Experience Required: Three years of experience in technical direction for plays and dance concerts at the university level and/or three years of professional experience in technical direction, or any combination thereof. Plus, three years of experience in facilities management in higher education is preferred.
Key Competencies: • Proficient in current trends in scenic technology. • Demonstrated skill with budget management, computerized drafting, rigging, carpentry, metalworking, theatrical lighting, and sound engineering. • Ability to work with a diverse undergraduate student population. • Excellent organizational, communication and time management skills. • Ability to supervise student workers at various skill levels. • Mechanical skills in the use of hand and power tools and gas and electric welders. • Ability to produce construction drawings and build off designer drawings.
Physical Requirements: With or without accommodation: • Ability to lift and carry materials weighing between 50 – 100 pounds on a daily basis. • Ability to climb, kneel, reach, walk, push, pull, grasp, feel, speak understandably, hear for communication, listening and understanding directions. • Close visual acuity.
Job Conditions: • Will be on call for frequent events and performances requiring night and weekend work. • Will work at heights, around moving machinery, and with exposure to noise, vibration, and dust.
