Teaching Fellow in Human Geography

£31,866 per annum Full Time, Fixed Term - Academic

The School of Social Sciences, Oxford Brookes University wishes to appoint a Teaching Fellow in Human Geography. The post is fixed for 9.5 months (1 September 2021 – 24 June 2022) to provide cover for a member of staff taking parental leave. We are seeking applicants wishing to join a passionate and committed team, engaged in research-informed teaching and fieldwork.

Applicants should have an honours degree in Geography (or a closely related discipline), and a doctorate in Human Geography (or a closely related discipline), or be demonstrably working towards such a qualification.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching, including; module leadership, lecturing, examining, dissertation supervision, pastoral care of students, and administration and organisation of teaching commensurate with the role. You will deliver a second-year undergraduate module ‘Development and Social Change', and contribute to teaching on core first- and second-year modules (including potential participation on UK and international field trips).

As Teaching Fellow in Human Geography you will be responsible for:

  • Teaching students using appropriate instruction methods and setting and assessing students' work.
  • Supervising and assessing students' projects and dissertations.
  • Undertaking curriculum development work including planning, development, evaluation and updating of courses and course materials and supervising course provision.

  • Caring for the pastoral needs of students including counselling and guidance in relation to their academic programme.

  • You should have:

  • A honours degree in Geography or closely related discipline
  • A PhD in Human Geography (or related field), or demonstrably working towards such a qualification.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and/or postgraduates at HE level.
  • Experience of undergraduate and/or postgraduate marking and assessing students' work and providing formative and summative feedback
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Have skills in working independently and as part of a team.
  • Be able and willing to undertake and, in some cases, lead on administrative duties and to participate fully in the Department.
  • Post start date: 1st September 2021.
