The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Teaching Fellow to undertake development, delivery and administration of teaching and learning in Mechanical Engineering Design. This is a fixed-term post to support teaching in the 2022-2023 academic year which is available until 30th September 2023. The successful candidate will support teaching, learning and assessment activities on several design-focussed modules offered by the School. They will work in the Engineering Build Space, supporting student work and supervising projects. They may give lectures and tutorials, and will supervise laboratory work. Their high-quality teaching will ensure a high-quality student experience while maintaining academic rigour. They will contribute to open days and outreach activities.

All applicants must include both a curriculum vitae (no length restriction) and a statement not exceeding two pages of how they meet the person specification for the post. The statement could include some examples of previous mechanical design projects they have worked on along with some comments on how they were (or could be) applied to teaching Mechanical Engineering Design. Applicants should not upload additional documents (e.g. theses, research papers, certificates) which have not been specifically requested.


You will have a good honours degree in a relevant subject. You may be working towards, or may have been awarded, a doctoral level qualification in a relevant area. You will have subject expertise in design and manufacturing beyond that in your honours degree. You will have experience in teaching in higher education or in an appropriate industrial context. You will have strong communication, IT, time management and organisational skills, along with excellent interpersonal skills with relevant experience of working independently and as part of a team. You will have an understanding of equal opportunity issues and practical health and safety concerns in a teaching or industrial context. You must have the capacity to contribute collegiately to the life and community of the School by undertaking a variety of duties, such as supporting offer holder days and outreach activities which may occasionally require evening and weekend work.

Job Description


To undertake design, delivery and administration of teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate and degree apprenticeship level in Mechanical, Materials Process Engineering within the School of Engineering. To provide professional support for teaching, learning and assessment activities, including practical and computational work in the area of Engineering Design. To supervise and support student projects, and to provide academic and pastoral support to students in the School of Engineering. To contribute to the development of high-quality teaching and student experience in Mechanical, Materials and Process Engineering with subject expertise in design and manufacturing.


1. To contribute to the educational goals of the School of Engineering, including appropriate management and administrative responsibilities related to programme delivery and curriculum development.

2. To develop and apply teaching, learning and assessment approaches which may be novel or innovative, which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm among students. This may be across a range of modules, within a specific subject area or in relation to the School's Engineering Build Space facility.

3. To contribute to aspects of teaching, learning and assessment, design and delivery, including the creation of materials to support the full range of activities, including laboratories and project work.

4. To contribute to curriculum design and review, at a module and course level as required.

5. To transfer novel or innovative teaching approaches to other teaching staff as required.

6. To support the School's Engineering Build Space facility and be an active and collegial member of the Engineering Build Space community.

7. To fulfil a range of student facing roles associated with the School's Engineering Build Space facility including project support and student design consultation.

8. To maintain an excellent level of technical awareness and technical competency in relation to current technologies and engineering practice in relation to Engineering design and manufacturing.

9. To undertake relevant training and pursue opportunities to work towards professional teaching qualifications (if not already held).

10. To undertake specific departmental roles, and contribute to departmental activities such as outreach work, student recruitment, or open days, as required.

11. To be active in the academic environment including attending stream and School meetings, participating in committees and working groups within the School of Engineering, the Faculty and the University.

12. To ensure compliance with health and safety in all aspects of work and other University regulations and good practice in all aspects of work and, where appropriate, undertake risk assessments.

13. To support and comply with the University and School of Engineering teaching quality assurance standards and procedures, including the provision of such information as may be required by the School or the University.

14. To engage in external academic activities in accordance with the School of Engineering strategy and which enhance our national/international reputation. Such activities may include: membership of committees of academic bodies; external examining; working with relevant professional institutions; participation in knowledge transfer; development of industrial links and other related activities; and publishing in journals.

You will not be required to undertake research activities, although there may be opportunities to do so when compatible with teaching-related commitments. You will be encouraged to support the research activities of the School where possible.

The duties and responsibilities outlined are for guidance on the main aspects of the job. The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their duties, and may be assigned other duties at the discretionary of their line manager. Occasional weekend, evening and overseas working may be required.

Further Particulars

The School of Engineering at the University of Warwick is a multidisciplinary department with strengths in research and teaching. The School teaches a range of undergraduate and taught Masters courses, and usually has > 1,200 students on taught courses with an annual Year 1 undergraduate intake of c. 320 students. Students on our conventional undergraduate programmes follow a common programme of study in Year 1 and the first term of Year 2. After this, most students choose to join specialised engineering courses for the remainder of their degrees. Mechanical Engineering is usually the most popular specialism and can be studied at BEng or MEng level. The School has also recently launched a Degree Apprenticeship course in Electromechanical Engineering (EMDA).

The School is divided into four Discipline Streams (Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical, Materials and Process Engineering, and Systems and Information Engineering). The successful applicant will join the Mechanical, Materials and Process Discipline Stream, which is the largest in the School with around 30 academic staff. The post will support teaching of Mechanical Engineering Design, in which there are currently four main modules. ES192 (Engineering Design), ES2D2 (Mechanical Engineering Design), ES3C2 (Advanced Mechanical Engineering Design) run in the first three respective years of our undergraduate programmes. ES1B1 (Engineering Design and Application) is part of our EMDA programme. Details of the modules can be found in the University of Warwick's module catalogue.

Most design teaching takes place in the School's Engineering Build Space area. The postholder will support the Engineering Build Space and is likely to contribute to teaching across the suite of our design teaching activities. They will also support undergraduate project activities and will perform general teaching and administrative activities as expected for a teaching- focused member of academic staff in the School.
