The Education Program at Barnard College is currently seeking a Teaching Assistant for the courses titled Multicultural Elementary Pedagogy (EDUC BC 3053) and Multicultural Secondary Pedagogy (EDUC BC 3054). Note: These courses run concurrently in the same space with overlapping curriculums, so the experience will be the same as being a TA for one course that has differentiated instruction. The courses engage pre-service teachers in developing effective strategies for teaching in ways that draw upon five specific domains of knowledge: knowledge of self, content, pedagogy, context, and students. Students will be introduced to a variety of teaching approaches and develop ways to adapt them to teach various subjects to students in urban public school settings. Students will learn to write lesson plans, develop assessments, and practice teaching in “microteaching” sessions taught to peers.

Essential Duties Summary
• Attend all weekly seminars (one per week); • Work with the instructor to read and respond to journals and interactive notebooks, plan for class, lead smaller group meetings during class, visit fieldwork placement sites as needed, and evaluate students with the instructor; • Assist the course instructor with a variety of instruction and classroom- related tasks.
Required Qualification Summary
Selected candidates must be actively enrolled in an advanced degree program in education or related field. A secondary education background (having taught in middle or high school) or an elementary education background (having taught in grades 1-5) is required, with preference for elementary teaching experience. Candidates should have familiarity with multicultural and social justice theories of pedagogy, best practices in teaching, a positive attitude about the possibilities for public schools, and an open mind. Candidates must be available for planning meetings and teaching. Candidates should be willing to occasionally travel to Brooklyn, Queens and/or Manhattan for observations of students at times throughout the semester.
