Job description

Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER)

ISER is a research department in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Essex. ISER's research excellence is demonstrated by its outstanding publication record and substantial research funding. ISER employs scholars of international prominence publishing in the top journals in their fields. Information is the lifeblood of ISER; all ISER personnel are responsible for its security to the organisations and individuals who provide it. Whilst ISER must abide by the University of Essex computing policies, ISER is required to conform to a far stricter Information Security regime due to the data that we process and the research that we undertake. ISER's computing policies and procedures therefore supersede those of the University.

Duties of the Role

The role of the Systems Manager is to ensure ISER's IT infrastructure and operations are sufficiently robust to maintain ISO certification whilst modernising and developing systems and processes to meet user needs. The postholder will engage with internal and external stakeholders to design and implement systems as needs change over time.

Qualifications and Skills required

The successful candidate will hold an IT related Degree or have equivalent experience. They will be experienced in strategic planning of IT infrastructures and have experience working within a highly regulated environment (ISO27001 or equivalent). They will have experience engaging with stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds to interpret needs and strategically plan and design services for the future.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills are required, including the ability to explain technical concepts and deliver training to ‘non-technical' colleagues. The successful candidate will be ability to lead, motivate and manage a team and foster excellent working relationships with core University personnel.
