Sustainable Transport Trial Manager

Job Purpose

The successful candidate will take responsibility for managing a trial of solutions to encourage the use of sustainable transport. Tasks will include trial set-up, recruitment of study participants, supporting implementation of the solutions and coordinating collection of participant data. They will liaise with key internal, external and community partners. The successful candidate will ensure the trial is efficiently run and key deliverables are met on time.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Take a lead role in the direction of all aspects of the trial and be accountable for the trial and trial management activities.

2. Oversee overall operations related to the trial including trial set-up, recruitment of study participants, implementation of the solutions and coordinating data collection.

3. Review and revise the project strategy protocol, standard operating procedures and other trial related documents.

4. Monitor the progress of research activities, develop and maintain accurate records and prepare periodic reports, as required.

5. Establish and maintain effective channels of communication with the research team and internal and external partners, advising on progress and potential areas of risk to the project.

6. Manage the trial milestones and deliverables and other relevant outputs.

7. Use initiative and judgment to identify and resolve any issues effectively and efficiently.

8. Manage the project budget, monitor project expenditures and ensure financial procedures are adhered to.

9. Maintain complex and/or high-volume databases of participant data.

10. Use specialist knowledge to contribute to the writing up of reports/publications arising from work on the project.

11. Work collaboratively with others, including within the wider College/Institute/School and where relevant with external contacts, to enhance the delivery of the research aims and support the broader strategic aims of the University.

12. Contribute to the outreach and recruitment activities of the University/College/School/Institute.

13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/PIs. 14. To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & Experience



A1 Degree or equivalent (in health, climate change, active/sustainable travel, sustainable transport or related discipline)

A2 Expert knowledge in trials/evaluation projects


B1 Higher degree in relevant discipline (e.g. Masters or Doctorate)



C1 Strong project/trial management capabilities

C2 Excellent communication skills both oral and written.

C3 Excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills

C4 Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

C5 Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

C6 Ability to organise and prioritise work and meet deadlines.

C7 Computer competency including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel.



E1 Proven experience in project management, particularly in the field of randomized controlled trials and/or other full scale evaluations

E2 Significant experience in trials/evaluation projects

E3 Relevant managerial experience in a similar or related role.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum pro rata.

This post is part time (22.5 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 3 years
