Position Summary

The Department of Surgery at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking applications for a full-time academic surgical oncologist to join our Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery. The Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery is among the 9 clinical Divisions in the Department of Surgery. The Division currently includes 11 faculty members and 7 Advanced Practice Providers who provide a broad array of clinical services in order to provide the highest quality multidisciplinary care for our surgical oncology patients. The Division is also actively involved in leading and contributing to our vast portfolio of clinical/translational research and educational missions, through our collaboration with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the North Carolina Cancer Hospital. Academic appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, commensurate with the candidate's experience. The clinical focus will remain in GI malignancies, with particular emphasis on lower GI malignancies and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Prospective candidates must be fellowship-trained and/or Board Certified/Board eligible in Complex General Surgical Oncology (or SSO-approved Fellowship in Surgical Oncology prior to the establishment of the CGSO Board).

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Faculty members within the Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery must possess a desire to commit to all three missions of the Department and School of Medicine, including the clinical, education, and research missions. Clinical responsibilities will include participation in multidisciplinary care, tumor boards, and surgical support of oncology programs at UNC, and at its affiliated institutions. Faculty members must be committed to delivering high quality clinical care that is of value to the patients of the UNC Healthcare system. In addition, the faculty member will have academic opportunities throughout the UNC School of Medicine and the Medical Center, with time allocation dependent on career interests and academic qualifications. Faculty members are expected to regularly participate in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows. Furthermore, Surgical Oncology faculty participate in outreach to our many community-based referral medical groups. Regarding the research mission, a commitment to any one of a broad array of research interests is critical, including but not limited to oncology clinical trials, tissue procurement, outcomes, health services, basic science, translational, ethics, education, or global surgery research. Overall, the selected candidate must be professional, team-oriented, and have the ability to interact well with colleagues inside and out of the Division, and the Department. Chosen candidates must either have a current North Carolina Medical License or be eligible for application.
