Subject Matter Experts within UNE Online are critical to the success of UNE's online programs. The role of the subject matter expert is to design or revise a master's level course for online students using best practices for online education that is aligned with program learning outcomes. SMEs are responsible for developing or revising a course syllabus, choosing weekly readings and learning materials, aligning CEPH criteria to course, recording video lectures, creating engaging homework assignments and group activities, writing interactive discussion board and weekly assignment topics that enable students to delve more deeply into the content while building community, and developing assessments to measure learning outcomes. The subject matter expert will work closely with a member of the UNE Instructional Design Team who facilitates the building of the course in Brightspace. Subject matter experts receive guidance from the Graduate Programs In Public Health staff.

The Graduate Program in Public Health currently seeks Subject Matter experts to design or revise courses in Principles of Public Health, Public Health Policy and Advocacy, Occupational Health, and Public Health Administration and Leadership.

The ideal candidate possesses at least 2-3 years online teaching experience in a higher educational setting, demonstrated past experience with online curriculum development and assessment, and have 3-5 years' experience in their area of expertise.


Subject Matter Experts are responsible for:

  • Designing online courses in area of expertise in accordance with best practices in field of study and in alignment with CEPH criteria
  • Course design includes, but is not limited to, recorded weekly lectures, develop syllabi, choose all reading materials, designing assignments, group activities, rubrics, and final projects
  • Working with Instructional Design Team to meet all deadlines and milestones in course development
  • Developing learning modules that guide students through their educational experience while upholding and adhering to the UNE Online commitment to student success
  • Incorporating health equity, health justice and social determinants of health into course content and perspective
  • Willingness to be creative and consider the use of multiple forms of technology that appeal to different learning styles while guiding students to meet the course and program learning outcome
  • Qualifications


  • A master's degree in the specific discipline or closely related field; Ph.D. preferred
  • Possess 3-5 years' experience in designated field
  • Patience and compassion for students' challenges
  • Experience in online public health courses design
  • Ability to communicate clearly online. Excellent writing skills
  • A minimum of 2-3 years online teaching experience in the area of instruction
  • Knowledge and commitment to healthy equity, social determinants of health, and inclusion of marginalized populations
  • A desire to motivate and encourage students in their academic work
  • Previous instructional experience with adult students, preferably in an online setting
  • A familiarity with Brightspace online learning system preferred
