  • The vascular endothelium, formed by a single layer of endothelial cells (EC), not only lines the inner surface of human blood vessels but also performs endocrine and paracrine functions. There are many factors that cause an endothelial alteration and the resulting damage leads to a series of responses that lay the pathophysiological basis of some cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. This research project is aimed at creating a 3D model on which the ECs will grow and it will allow to reproduce in vitro the intima of the human vascular wall. The project will develop through the realization of the 3D scaffold using the electrospinning technology and its functionalization to reproduce the chemical and physical properties of the human vascular intima; HUVEC cell cultures and their growth on the 3D scaffolds to form the endothelium; preliminary tests for simulation of an in vitro model of endothelial damage; relative morphological, phenotypical and cell growth analysis.
