  • Alignment layers (AL) of polymers fabricated by our chemical colleagues will be characterised by grazing incidence X-ray scattering at small and large angles (GISAXS and GIWAXS) using laboratory sources, as well as synchrotron sources. This study will provide information on the structure and texture of LA at the macroscopic scale.

    In the framework of the project, we are opening a position for a post-doctoral researcher who will be in charge of studying the physical phenomena that occur at the interface between the liquid crystal (LC) and the film of a polymer semiconductor. The candidate's work will focus on the characterisation and understanding of complex interactions at the LA/LC interphase such as graphoepitaxy or molecular epitaxy. The work will be carried out using X-ray based techniques to assess the orientation of the LC molecular director in the vicinity of the alignment surface.

    The present project is dedicated to the study and development of PSLM devices. PSLM devices are optically addressable liquid crystal (LC) hybrid light modulators that include an organic multilayer as a photosensitive element and offer many potential advantages over other smart window systems. They can operate without an external power supply, their response time is several orders of magnitude shorter than most other chromogenic devices, they can be easily controlled by the user, their bright-state colour depends on the band gap of the organic semiconductor and can be adjusted by chemical engineering, and the organic light-sensitive layers can be processed in solution and are therefore compatible with large-area devices.

    Eligibility criteria

    The successful candidate should have a PhD and experience in - in organic electronics and - physical characterisation techniques. Knowledge of synchrotron-based structural methods will be a plus.
