The Academic Foundations Center (AFC) and its myriad programs provide academic opportunities, resources, leadership development and other support initiatives for first generation-low income college bound scholars to achieve success through education. As the first Rutgers-Newark special program established to identify talent beyond traditional measures and then recruit, retain and graduate talented young people from the greater Newark area, AFC remains a jewel in the crown of Rutgers- Newark, serving nearly 1500 undergraduate students annually.

Posting Summary

Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Student Counselor II which will report to the Project Director.

The Student Counselor II duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manages a student caseload focused on addressing the academic, financial, career, and personal needs of SSS students
  • Offers student support and group counseling modules
  • Implements and monitors individual and group learning activities and workshops
  • Follows caseload management procedures, making appropriate contributions to student database systems, and supporting programmatic initiatives for SSS students
  • Contriubutes to the development of a comprehensive support delivery system that addresses academic and personal development needs of SSS students
  • Provides technical knowledge and expertise to evaluate academic credentials and diagnostic tests
  • Develops with contributes group counseling modules, as well as, design, implement and monitor individual and group learning activities such as workshops, courses, and seminars
  • Assists with the EOF financial aid confirmation process for incoming first-year students

    Position Status Full Time Hours Per Week Daily Work Shift Day Work Arrangement

    Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

    The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date.     Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Requires up to two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.
  • Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred Qualifications

    Should have an understanding of the often unique life and family circumstances of SSS students, more specifically, first-generation, low-income. They should have sensitivity to the challenges that SSS students face and have to overcome.

    Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment

    Light lifting may be required.

    Immunization Requirements

    Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
