About The Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory “SUPL” The Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory “SUPL” is located within Stawell Gold Mine (SGM) in Stawell, Victoria. More specifically, it is a unique facility, located 1050m underground within SGM for the purposes of conducting high sensitivity and innovative long-term physics and other experiments that require a radiation quiet environment. SUPL is an exciting, publicly funded scientific collaboration between government bodies, research bodies and institutions, and local community. SUPL will be utilised by research teams from the Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics (CDM) seeking to solve one of the biggest mysteries of the universe through their search for dark matter. About the Role The SUPL Facility & Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the managing the operation of the overall SUPL facility, with a major focus on safety, coordination of occupancy and access to the facility, and maintaining a close working relationship with SGM. They will be responsible for the on-site day- to-day management of the SUPL (including safety procedures, scheduling, access, coordination of planned and unplanned repair and maintenance activities) and for oversight of all arrangements (including on-site transport, induction, safety) for personnel involved in the conduct of experiments and related activities within SUPL, including approved visitors. This position also oversees and coordinates access arrangements for any contractor groups and project managers involved in the construction of research experiments in the laboratory. The SUPL management of the facility also requires managing/limiting occupancy of the site to ensure mine safety protocols are maintained.

In a typical week at work, you may:

  • Liaise with the SGM to coordinate safety training, access to PPE and inductions for self and for all researchers, tenants, contractors and visitors of SUPL
  • Ensure appropriate policies, procedures and other relevant documentation are in place for the operation of SUPL and manage their implementation
  • Monitor and coordinate SUPL occupancy, including necessary controls regarding total number of people in the laboratory at any point in time
  • Liaise with the scientific research teams on safety, resources, schedules and space allocation
  • Arrange approved on-site transportation of SUPL occupants to and from the laboratory
  • Oversee the implementation of facility related compliance and quality assurance, including audit and reporting requirements to all relevant parties
  • About You You will be experienced in managing complex scientific and/or technical facilities, and have comprehensive knowledge and understanding of health and safety requirements and regulations. You will be a self-starter, with high level management and organisational skills, able to work under broad direction with limited direct supervision and to develop positive, innovative solutions to complex operational issues. You will be skilled in building positive working relationships with diverse stakeholders and also in adapting to new situations and quickly assimilating new concepts and information.
