This is a full-time, temporary, benefits eligible, grant funded position expected to end on or before 2/28/2024. Continuation of this position is contingent upon continued funding.

High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent with at least three years of experience in a laboratory at a university, college or related area. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.

Nature & Purpose of Position

Performs under supervision, a wide variety of routine and technical tasks including maintaining and operating a laboratory for a research project or grant.

Primary Responsibilities

Interprets and applies routine but moderately complex directives requiring judgment, attention, and care to tasks such as, but not necessarily limited to supervising student personnel, establishing procedures, maintaining inventory, ordering supplies, equipment maintenance and repair, sanitation, security, and compliance with university and governments procedures, standards, rules and regulations. Transports, processes, analyzes, and archives samples. Prepares analysis involving the isolation of bacteria from soil, human and plant pathogens at biosafety level 2 (BSL-2), and DNA extraction of isolates. Performs molecular analysis of whole bacterial genomes and uses bioinformatics to annotate genetic data. Consults with the Principal Investigator regarding laboratory procedures and evaluation of collected data. Prepares data for dissemination (presentation, articles). Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications

Must be familiar with common laboratory equipment, including BSL-2 procedures. Will be responsible for working with biohazardous materials, biosafety training is required. Must be able to follow oral and written instruction and to work a modified schedule to accommodate special projects. May require frequent contact with students, staff, and researchers. Extreme care is necessary to avoid injury to self or others.
