The Curran Laboratory has an NIH-funded Sr. Research Associate position available at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, California, USA.

The position is funded by an independent NIH project aimed to investigate age- related changes in metabolic homeostasis across the lifespan in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. (https: // gero.usc.edu/labs/curranlab/)

Our long-term goal is to generate blueprints that allow an individual to maximize health over the course of their lifespan. Informed by genetics, we develop the capacity to predict which diets are ideal for a healthy life and which should be avoided. Moreover, we investigate the mechanistic basis of the molecules, genes, and pathways we have discovered can influence healthspan. The product of this investment is the ability to use diet as a means to circumvent genetic predisposition and prevent or reduce the severity of age- related disease. Our research has benefited from the ability to quickly test several diet-gene pairs in C. elegans which has allowed us to transition to directed studies in murine models. Although we will continue to exploit the utility of genetics and biochemistry of the worm, we expect that our mouse and cultured human cell approaches will synergize and provide relevant information for human aging.

The Sr. Research Associate Plans, designs, and conducts highly technical and complex research projects independently and in consultation with supervisor/PI, which requires the regular use of ingenuity and innovation. May contribute to the development of new concepts, techniques, and standards. Analyzes research data and provides interpretations. Contributes to the development of research documentation for publication and/or prepares technical reports, papers and/or records. Develops solutions to complex research problems. Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to staff and/or student workers as needed.

The ideal candidate should have extensive experience in rodent models, brain health measures, and pathology determination as well as experience in Alzheimer's disease models. Candidate with research experience in more than one model system is preferred and preference will be given to candidates with experience in mouse behavioral analysis and metabolic measures. Candidates must have good oral and written communication skills and must have a publication record that is available to assess their experience.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Characterization of Alzheimer's disease mouse models including: (1) Amyloid β accumulation biochemically and immunohistochemistry in cultured cells and sectioned brains; (2) Neurofibrillary tangles biochemically and cell-based measures; (3) Neuroinflammation measures by molecular biology approaches; (4) glial activation by cell culture; (5) cognitive decline by behavioral assays.

  • Assisting with general mouse colony management and collection

  • Organization, and presentation of data.

  • Writing of manuscripts and assistance with preparing data for applications.

  • Assistance in training students and post-docs in the above techniques.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

    Applicants should have a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, or other related fields. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of research experience in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. USC experience is a plus.

    Minimum Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate

    Minimum Experience: 3 year Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related education and experience in research specialization with advanced knowledge of equipment, procedures, and analysis methods.

    This position is contingent upon receipt of the necessary funding from this or any subsequent grant to continue employment. ​This is a full-time position with a five-day-a-week schedule. No visa sponsorship.
