Primary Purpose of the Position

Winston-Salem State University, School of Health Sciences seeks adjunct instructors to teach Healthcare Economics course in the Bachelor of Healthcare Management Spring 2022 term.

This course is designed to introduce fundamental concepts of health economics and healthcare financial management. It examines the importance of economics in healthcare decisions, both demand and supply-side factors, and how public policy influences the economy of healthcare. The course also explores the current system of financing healthcare and factors affecting it as well as healthcare financial management at the facility level, including but not limited to understanding financial statements purposes, an introduction to pro forma income statements and Excel, operating and capital budgeting, managing financial resources by budget variance analysis, the financial relationship among volume, revenue and expenses, and also state and federal systems and private insurance issues and the relationship to disparities.

All candidates must possess a meaningful blend of education degree and work experience in the relevant field, and be able to demonstrate successful and well-documented teaching experience.

Healthcare management is a growing, diverse field of study that incorporates business managerial functions in healthcare and in healthcare related environments. The profession offers flexibility and the potential for advancement with additional experience and further education. As important, this field of study offers the chance for graduates to have a positive influence on the healthcare of individuals and communities. Graduates have opportunities to work at entry-level positions in the following settings: assisted-living facilities, community and government agencies, health insurance companies, hospital departments, and long term care facilities.

Minimum Experience/Education

Master's degree is required in Health Care or related field, from an accredited institution of higher learning. Professional experience in Health Services Management and Higher Education teaching experience preferred.

Normal Work Schedule

Healthcare Economics- course maybe face to face, hybrid, or online

Department Required Skills

The Healthcare Management Department is seeking applicants who are capable of communicating clearly and effectively with students and colleagues. Each applicant must be prepared and organized. All applicants are required to utilize Canvas. Although training is available, experience is preferred.

A terminal degree (i.e. PhD, JD, DBA, DHA) from an accredited institution of higher learning is preferred.

Adequately prepare all course materials and lessons for healthcare management course. Provide each student with clear course expectations, evaluations, timelines, and approved syllabus. Provide engaging and relevant assignments for students that demonstrate learning outcomes. Suitably challenge, engage, serve and communicate with students to encourage their participation and learning while maintaining mutual value and respect. Complete grade books, mid-term and final grade submission, learning assessments and final exam assessments on a timely basis, and respond to student questions on a timely basis. Ensure course and program learning outcomes are delivered as defined by the syllabus.
