Project/Unit Description

The Test Engineering Division (TEN) of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) develops Hardware in the Loop (HITL) test sets, test tools, analysis tools and test methods for US Air Force, Army, and Navy sponsors. These systems provide high fidelity simulation and stimulation of real-time Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/ IR), Radio Frequency (RF) and Avionics environments for testing Electronic Warfare (EW) and avionics systems. These systems protect aircraft from adversarial ground and airborne threats. This research is critical for supporting the development, trouble-shooting, analysis and testing of EW and Integrated EW (IEW) systems.

Job Purpose

The Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software applications and products. Additionally, the Software Engineer manages software development teams, provides technical leadership, and establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The Software Engineer is proficient in programming languages such as Java, C, C++, Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy. In this role, the Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), DevOps, Application Programming Interface (API) development, container development, and distributed systems. The Software Engineer also applies engineering principles to software creation, manages production releases of software, performs code reviews, merges feature development branches, and analyzes and triages issues. The necessary skill areas for the Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, software design and architecture development, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, software debugging and testing, and working on development teams. The Software Engineer also works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop requirements and user stories for a software system
  • Implement front-end or backend software features in a JavaScript or Python framework, respectively
  • Design data models and implement these data storage approaches in database systems
  • Perform software development, software debugging, software modification / enhancement, and software documentation
  • Create automated software tests
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts
  • Contribute to technical reports and presentations
  • Additional Responsibilities
  • Follow agile software development processes and practices
  • Support translation of system requirements into software requirements and design
  • Work within cross-functional teams to refine requirements, formulate technical approaches, implement designs, review code, and spread knowledge
  • Design, implement, and execute automated tests (both unit and integration) to verify system functionality
  • Contribute to automated build processes and continuous integration pipelines
  • Document workflows and system use cases and facilitate user training
  • Utilize and contribute to open source libraries
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with C# (WinForms, WPF), C++, MATLAB, Java, or Python
  • Experience with software version control tools and best practices (e.g. Git)
  • Experience developing on/for Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Experience leading software development teams
  • Experience with software development and collaboration tools such as GitLab and Atlassian
  • Experience with EW and avionics systems' architecture, function and interface
  • Familiarity with relevant interfaces, including MIL-STD-1553, Ethernet, serial, discrete and analog signal interfaces
