Offer Description

The social science researcher is the co-principal investigator (co-PI) of the social science research activities of the INTEGRATE consortium.

Within the Bordeaux Population Health Research Center (Inserm/IRD Unit U1219), he/she co-coordinates the design and implementation of the research activities of Work Package 7 (WP7) of the INTEGRATE project “Community sensitization and acceptability assessment of the clinical trial”.

He/she is placed under the hierarchical authority of the INTEGRATE project leader for the UB partner and is supervised functionally by the INTEGRATE transversal coordinator in charge of the overall project supervision and management.

Essential activities:

• Conception, coordination, and supervision, in collaboration with the two Nigerian Co-PIs, of the social sciences research activities. This includes a formative study aimed at informing the design and implementation of the community sensitization strategy (pre-trial phase). The formative study will be implemented by the social sciences study manager and field research investigators in Nigeria.

These activities include:

-Literature review, and discussions with field experts regarding existing community sensitization strategies on Lassa fever

-Writing of the research protocol and submission to the research ethics committee (deliverable for M2)

-Design of data collection tools (questionnaire and individual interview guide); drafting the standard operating procedure (SOP); recruitment and training of field research investigators (deliverable for M4)

-Implementation of quantitative and qualitative data collection (deliverable for M7)

-Data analysis and interpretation of results

-Writing the formative study report (deliverable for M9)

• Coordination and supervision, in collaboration with the Nigeria co-PIs, of research activities to assess the effectiveness of the community sensitization strategy, to document the context in which the INTEGRATE trial will be implemented, and to assess the acceptability of participation in the INTEGRATE trial (per-trial phase). This part of social sciences research activities will be implemented by the social science study manager and field research investigators.

These activities notably imply:

-Literature review

-Writing of the research protocol and submission to the research ethics committee (deliverable for M13)

-Design of data collection tools (observation and individual interviews guides); drafting the standard operating procedure (SOP); training of field research investigators

-Implementation of data collection

-Data analysis and interpretation of results

-Writing scientific articles, dissemination of results and recommendations from the study (deliverable for M48)

Environment and work context, specific constraints linked to the position:

The INTEGRATE project, supported by the CORAL platform (UB/BPH/GHiGS, PACCI and ALIMA), is financed by the European Commission (Horizon Europe EDCTP3). It aims to set up an adaptive multinational platform clinical trial for the development of innovative treatments for Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever endemic in West Africa. The project will be carried out mainly in Owo and Irrua in Nigeria, over 5 years (July 2023 to June 2028); the start of recruitment of participants in the clinical trial is planned from Q2 2024. WP7 will be implemented over 4 years (July 2023 to June 2027).

The INTEGRATE project brings together a consortium of 16 international partners based in sub-Saharan Africa (08), Europe (07) and one in the USA.

Conditions of exercise:

Required diploma and/or qualification level:

- Doctorate (PhD) in Public Health / Global Health in the Souths

- Or engineering degree equivalent to a doctorate

- University degree in the field of health is a plus

- Knowledge of the context of countries with limited resources and field experience is a plus

Skills required:

Knowledge

- Methodology of qualitative and mixed studies

- English (comprehension and oral and written expression)

Expertise

- Leadership/team management experience

- Experience supervising quantitative data collection (e.g. survey type)

- Experience in quantitative data analysis (e.g. with R statistical analysis software) would be a plus

- Experience in collecting qualitative data (e.g. in-depth semi-structured interviews)

- Experience supervising the transcription of qualitative data

- Experience in qualitative data analysis (e.g. with MAXQDA software)

- Experience in intervention/strategy implementation (implementation and/or evaluation)

- Experience studying epidemic diseases such as Lassa fever, COVID-19 or Ebola would be a plus

Abilities

- Rigor, autonomy, sense of organization

- Good analytical and synthesis skills

- Ability to write documents/procedures and scientific articles

- Mastery of office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

- Experience with a quantitative data collection tool (e.g. Kobo Collect, RedCap) is a plus

- Experience with qualitative data analysis software (e.g. MAXQDA)

- Ability to work under deadline constraints while demonstrating dynamism and initiative.
