This position is covered by the UAW Collective Bargaining Agreement. At the end of the probationary period employees will be required to pay union dues per article 1 of the agreement.

As a S06 Landscape Equipment Operator, you will operate a wide variety of landscape, maintenance and/or construction equipment and motorized wheeled vehicles including commercial trucks and tractors under 25,000 lbs. to support campus grounds activities. You'll also perform manual labor for general landscape maintenance and/or landscape construction tasks, including turf maintenance, plant maintenance, litter control, snow removal, and other duties. Other duties will include promptly reporting unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscape, equipment, or facilities.

This position is subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies, especially snow related emergencies. It is also subject to shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays) to meet seasonal work demands. It is possible to have to work in weather related extremes of high and low temperatures or snow and rain for extended periods and you may come into contact with sewage and dead animals, bees/stings, pollen and other environmental allergens.

What we need:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years experience with landscape maintenance, landscape construction, and related equipment operation, to include a minimum of one year experience operating motorized landscape and snow removal equipment.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator license required. CDL B license required or must obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Excellent interpersonal (oral and written) skills in order to interact with a diverse range of people.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • A strong customer service orientation while providing a helpful and friendly approach to serving the campus community.
  • Is motivated to learn and takes initiative to be proactive.
  • Must have experience in leading teams.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing independent judgment and problem solving to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
  • What we'd prefer:

  • Experience in landscape maintenance and snow removal in a commercial or high volume residential landscape setting preferred.
  • Possession of a CDL B license prior to employment is a plus.
  • This is a union position within the United Auto Workers bargaining unit (UAW). The hire rate of pay is $20.44/hr.
