Full Time/Part Time Full Time Position Overview

The Law Library Serials/Documents Technician manages acquisition, creates and maintains records for legal serials, electronic resources and continuation materials; creates and maintains records for U.S. government documents relating to law; maintains the Law Library microform collection; responds to law faculty, staff and patron questions about serials, documents and microforms; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Responsibilities

Key Accountability Manages the overall operations of the Law Library Serials unit and cataloging by:

Job Duties

  • Selecting and working with appropriate vendors
  • Creating purchase orders and line items within an online integrated library system.
  • Receiving and distributing received items; recording, compiling and reporting acquisitions statistics
  • Updating OCLC to correspond to changes made to serial holdings
  • Searching international bibliographic databases to locate master records representing serial acquisitions, importing records into the local library repository, creating order lines and attaching holding information for final processing
  • Notifying Cataloging and Inter-library Loan Technician when continuing or electronic resources undergo changes that may require re-cataloging
  • Processing pdf files for access by staff and librarians
  • Working with stacks maintenance and the Collection Development Librarian to remove materials transitioning from print to electronic and large weeding projects
  • Label and process materials for circulation/use
  • Key Accountability Manages the overall operations of the Law Library Federal Depository Library Program unit by:

    Job Duties

  • Monitoring and following Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) regulations and responding to questionnaires in accordance with FDLP requirements
  • Ordering, receiving and claiming law-related materials selected for the Law Library through the FDLP, responding to customer inquiries about specific FDLP publications. Helping to process printed FDLP materials.
  • Reviewing and verifying accuracy of vendor-supplied bibliographic records for Depository titles
  • Coordinating annual FDLP item selection with Law Library Director and Collection Development Librarian
  • Reviewing and recording the Law Library's Federal Depository Library Program procedures
  • Key Accountability Manages the Law Library microform collection by:

  • Responding to customer inquiries concerning specific materials in the microform collecti
  • Managing the transition of Law Library microform inventory, including the depository program, to electronic resources
  • Collecting and reporting statistical data to meet American Bar Association and Association of American Law Schools requirements per the deadlines
  • Key Accountability Contributes to aw Library Operations by:

    Job Duties

  • Routing printed materials and distributing notifications for electronic resources
  • Advising the Law Library Director & Collection Development Librarian on resolution of legal serial publication problems
  • Performing inventory analysis to identify titles for publisher-specific cost saving packages and programs
  • Training, assigning work and supervising student workers who assist in materials processing, maintain records for printed and microfiche FDLP materials and who check-in and file publications
  • Position Qualifications

    Required Experience

  • 2 years of experience working in a library environment
  • Required Education

  • High School or GED
  • Required Licensures, Certifications or other Additional Preferred

  • Experience in supervisory practices
  • Experience in library terminology, using and applying bibliographic and other library information sources in printed and computerized format; using a bibliographic utility or in-house automated library system to perform acquisitions, cataloging or serials work; compiling and analyzing information and writing a summary in a work setting; using computer applications software.
  • Experience providing library services in an academic environment
  • Physical Requirements

  • Some lifting, reaching, stretching, pushing and pulling. Ability to lift, carry and/or otherwise move 50 pounds.
