POB-53 Senior Technology Programme Manager (Photonics Packaging & Systems Integration)

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Photonics Packaging and Systems Integration Group at the Tyndall Institute is recognised as a global leader in developing, prototyping and scaling to manufacturing advanced photonic and electronic packaging processes. Among its many activities, the group hosts the European Photonics Packaging Pilot Line (PIXAPP) and the European Photonics Innovation Academy which is part of PhotonHub Europe. The group collaborates with multiple academic and industry partners worldwide, leading many large-scale projects involving multiple research partnerships.

To further grow and develop its research activities, the group invites applications for an exciting position as Senior Technology Programme Manager. The position will primarily take responsibility for managing new and existing research projects in terms of their technical planning, scheduling and delivery of project results. This includes managing both large-scale publicly funded and private industry-funded projects. The position will involve direct supervision and support of researchers in the group to ensure they deliver on their individual research objectives. As a senior member of the Group you will have direct line management responsibility for a number of existing and future staff as the Group grows.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of the Photonics Packaging and Systems Integration Group, the Senior Technology Programme Manager will take responsibility for the following:

  • Provide strategic and operational support to the Head of Group in the future direction and growth of the broader Group
  • Management of ongoing projects in terms of their technical planning, scheduling and the delivery of project results.
  • Initial scoping, planning and preparation of new project technical ‘statements of work'. This includes both publicly funded and private industry-funded projects.
  • Manage the group's Pilot Line Gateway at Tyndall. This includes managing incoming project requests and technical partnerships within the overall Pilot Line consortium.
  • Support development of the group's new training activities, including the new AR-VR training programme.
  • Directly supervise and support researchers in the group to ensure they can deliver on their individual research objectives.
  • Support researchers in the group in preparing technical reports.
  • Engaging with key project stakeholders, including project partners, customers, and funding.
  • Essential Criteria

  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline, with typically eight years of relevant technical and project management experience.
  • Experience managing complex technical projects in photonics or electronics, particularly EU-funded projects.
  • Proven experience in taking a leadership role in both strategy development and direct supervision/management.
  • Experience in the following application areas: optical communications, medical devices and sensing.
  • Experience managing complex industry projects with demanding timelines.
  • Experience using project management tools such as Microsoft Project.
  • Demonstrate success in winning or contributing to competitive project funding calls.
  • Significant experience in engaging in knowledge / technology transfer and innovation activity to deliver impact to internal/external stakeholders, including experience in transferring ICT-related devices from R&D to scale-up manufacturing.
  • Evidence of defining the strategic direction for technology teams and credible experience in, or potential for, preparation of competitive research proposals such as industry, national and / or international funding opportunities.
  • Experience in technical staff supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills, including evidence of presenting research activities at an international level (e.g. conferences, exhibits and workshops).
  • Desirable Criteria

  • PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience in integrated photonics.
  • Experience in photonic and electronic packaging technologies.
  • Experience managing a Pilot Line involved in the transfer of research to early-stage manufacturing.
  • Experience in proposal writing and a history of securing funding from external public or private funding sources
  • Experience preparing project statements of work, negotiating contracts and project costing

    Appointment may be made on the Grade 7 Admin I Scale (B) €75,886 - €99,966 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
