We are seeking a Senior Systems Administrator for a new role within the Network and Telecommunications team. This is an exciting opportunity to develop a career in the networking technology and platforms used to support higher education at a world class university. In this role, you will provide technical expertise in the development, support and implementation of networking connectivity used by nearly 30,000 students.

The team works closely with colleagues across the institution to provide services such as wired, wireless and internet connectivity. Managing the day- to-day running of the network systems such as DHCP, DNS, VPN access and internet connectivity as well as the strategic development of services and improving the experience of users.

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

To provide specialist technical expertise across a breadth of technology platforms. To lead on projects and tasks, across both physical infrastructure and cloud services. To work as part of a team of likeminded colleagues, to ensure that issues are resolved swiftly, technical challenges are addressed, project actions are delivered on time and services and data remain stable and highly available. To mentor and develop less experienced colleagues in the team.

Providing IT solutions for Teaching, Research and Professional services. Using a cloud preferred methodology and selecting the most appropriate technologies for the business. Managing services both on-premise and within cloud technologies.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Working on IT tasks:

- Responding to escalated Service Now calls with professionalism and timeliness

- Communicating positively with users / customers, avoiding technical jargon

- Solving technically complex challenges

- Applying expertise to issues, implementing clean fixes

- Documenting solutions clearly and accurately

- Responsible for ensuring confidentiality, integrity and availability for data. Following information security and data management policies ensuring, least privilege and information assurance

- Ensuring appropriate levels of business continuity are factored into solutions and maintained during the solutions lifecycle

- Monitoring of systems and reacting to alerts and abnormal behaviour

Improving IT outputs:

- Identifying repeating or common issues, proposing, and implementing solutions to root cause fixes

- Identifying training needs for self and in the team around technical disciplines and advising IDG leadership on development opportunity

- Recommending Change Requests and preparing change documentation, representing Change at Change Advisory Board

- Leading on managing risks around Lifecycle management of systems and services supported by the team

- Managing Capacity and forecasting, to inform the 5-year planning cycle ensuring services are fit for purpose

- Promote standardised solutions, with a view to optimise and expand services where appropriate.

Working on Projects:

- Key role in project teams, providing guidance and expertise on medium and large projects

- Escalating challenges, proposing solutions

- Identifying and raising project risks

- Provide technical solutions to meet customer requirements

- Producing high quality defined services, to form part of the service catalogue

Technical expertise:

- Specialist knowledge of at least one of wireless, routing, software defined networking, IPAM using on premise or cloud solutions

- Specialist Knowledge in a cloud platform connectivity either Azure or AWS

- Technical leadership to optimise performance and costs
