Senior Research Support Specialist

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in science or a related field. Two (2) years of full-time directly related experience with advanced research related/laboratory activities. Laboratory Management which may include billing, inventory management and ordering supplies. Experience in cell culture; knowledge/experience in generation of recombinant DNA, primer design, DNA extraction and quantification, DNA and mRNA isolation, genotyping, and DNA gel electrophoresis. Knowledge of scientific software for data/statistical analysis.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Five (5) years of full- time directly related experience with advanced research related/laboratory activities in the isolation of human and mouse blood cells. Experience in mouse husbandry and genotyping as well as basic protein biochemistry, including expression and purification of recombinant proteins, Western blotting, and/or ELISA. Database and graphing software knowledge (Excel, FileMaker Pro, Access, Graphpad Prism).

Brief Description of Duties: The Senior Research Support Specialist will assist the Principal Investigator in the Department of Pediatrics. The incumbent will independently and/or with colleagues conduct basic science / translational research and ensure that all studies are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University, sponsor policies and state and federal guidelines. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for translational and clinical research in:

  • Maintain mouse breeding colony and genotype animals.
  • Generate and purify recombinant proteins using bacterial expression systems and gel filtration / affinity chromatography.
  • Purifying blood cells from human and mouse samples using magnetic beads and centrifugation methods.
  • Assisting in animal studies that require gavage or IP injections of medications, minor surgeries, harvesting tissues for histology.
  • Analyze all data collected for statistical significance using programs such as Excel and Graphpad Prism and provide the PI with graphs and/or tables of the data noting any abnormalities and discrepancies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Special Notes: The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
