Senior Research Software Engineer
Job description
Research Services
This full-time post is available from October 28th 2024 on a permanent basis.
We welcome applications from candidates interested in working part-time hours or job-sharing arrangements.
Research Software Engineers
The University of Exeter Research Software Engineering (RSE) Group supports cutting-edge research across the university, improving reproducibility and bolstering impact. RSEs make a vital contribution to the university's research portfolio by designing and developing software tools of a professional standard to address real-world challenges spanning the spectrum of computational and social science.
Every RSE in the team is a member of the academic community and collaborates with researchers across the university to create and extend software that facilitates and embodies research in a readable, reliable and reproducible fashion. RSEs are typically simultaneously engaged in several research projects, thus are expected to multi-task and prioritise their own workload. Given the diverse nature of projects, they are also often required to develop expertise in new areas.
We welcome applications from candidates interested in working part time or flexible hours, as well as job-sharing arrangements.
As a Senior RSE, you will provide line management and technical mentorship for RSEs within the team. You will play an important role in assisting the Deputy Head of RSE to set the strategic direction and embed good working practises to ensure the continued growth and success of the team.
About you
Successful applicants will be talented, versatile software developers working to a professional standard with up-to-date skills. You should have demonstrable experience of designing and developing software, supplemented by an understanding of best practices in software development. This experience could have been acquired working in industry or via a PhD degree that required significant use of computer programming and software engineering. Prior experience of managing RSE contributions to research projects is desirable.
About the team
We are a rapidly growing team of dedicated, friendly and enthusiastic software engineering professionals with a diverse set of interests and backgrounds. We value collaboration, respect and an openness to innovative practises and ways of working. We adopt a flexible, hybrid working style utilising a team space on Streatham Campus with some home working.
Benefits
We offer some fantastic benefits including:
