The Hydrographic Science Research Center is located at the John C. Stennis Space Center, which is a “federal city” that boasts the world's largest concentration of oceanographers. The successful candidate will be required to pass a NASA background security check to work at Stennis, and a USM employment background check.

Job Summary The Hydrographic Science Research Center (HSRC) at The University of Southern Mississippi is seeking to hire a Senior Research Scientist to expand its uncrewed vehicles team. As part of a multidisciplinary research team this senior position will provide technical and programmatic expertise to the Director, serving as logistic coordinator for the HSRC AUV's, as well as the Project Data Manager for the Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI).

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Applicant will serve as AUV logistic coordinator. In this position he/she will be responsible for all AUV operations, mobilization, demobilization, missions, and checklist.
  • Oversee the AUVs Engineers in operation and maintenance of the HSRC uncrewed vehicles fleet.
  • Prepares work schedules, annual work plan and project budget requests; purchases equipment, commodities and services within purchasing authority; monitors expenditures of funds allocated to project related to uncrewed systems.
  • Serve as USM Data Manager for the NOAA Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute. In this role the applicant will be responsible of OECI related projects data collection and processing and assuring the compliance with OECI Data Management Plan. Coordinate with the other OECI partner institutions data managers in maintaining the OECI database up to date and efficient.

  • Oversees development, implementation, and management of research projects including writing proposals, planning, statements of works, budgets, scheduling, report and manuscript preparation and dissemination of information through conferences and presentations.

  • Participate in project meetings, leadcoordinate the project team members, and perform other research duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Ocean Science, Hydrography, Earth Science plus at least 10 years of professional work experience and a demonstrated record of research achievement, or Master's degree in a relevant discipline plus at least 15 years of exceptional relevant professional work experience and a record of research achievement conducting/leading research in ocean exploration and mapping.
  • Proven experience in conducting at-sea operations using AUVs both for collecting bathymetric data and video data.
  • Proven experience in Multibeam data processing (bathymetry, seafloor reflectivity, water column backscatter) using Caris HIPS and SIPS
  • Proven experience in using the following software: ArchView GIS; IHS Kingdome; and Global Mapper,
  • Proven Experience using acoustic navigation systems, such as USBL and LBL including deploying mooring
  • Experience in workingleading effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Proven experience in preparing technical reports and delivering technical presentations
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language and the ability to communicate with a diverse group of individual
  • The candidate should have the ability to travel and work from large and small vessels
  • Should have demonstrated scientific, analytical, and numerical skills
  • Ability to utilize oceanographic/hydrographic data acquisition and processing software
  • A logical and independent mind
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Patience and determination
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD. in Ocean Science, Hydrography, Earth Science and/or related field plus 10+ years of experience working on an accredited research institution or academic program conducting research in ocean exploration and mapping.
  • Proven experience in collaborationparticipation in large multi year's multi institutions research projects (i.e. research consortia, international cooperation, etc.)
  • Track record of publications (peer review journals, meetings proceedings, technical reports) about seafloor mapping, benthic habitat characterization, sediments characterization and/or related topics
  • Experience in leading (chief scientist) scientific cruises and at-sea missions.
  • Experience in supervising/mentoring staff and students (undergraduate and/or graduate)
